Just to make sure people understand what's REALLY going down with Nali City, let me give you a better sequence of events:

July - QAPete quits PU as Site Director, details can be found in a thread over at PlanetCrap (you do the work and search for it, if you like)

August - plans start for the creation of BeyondUnreal, a community-run Unreal-engine site.

September - GameSpy puts up ForumPlanet-based test forums for PlanetUnreal, exposing their plans to move the forums and forum community to their proprietary software.

October - BeyondUnreal moves their copy of vBulletin, including copying their database info, to this server. Immediately thereafter, not only are BU admin accounts to PU disabled, many hosted sites find themselves without access to PU, including the Nali City admins, who had nothing at all to do with the forum move.

Also in October, GSI makes the decision that they wouldlike to cut ties immediately with me and the BU admins, including Nali City. Over time, other PU hosted sites get their access back. GSI provides us with a backup of all Nali City files.

November - GSI states that they'd like to drop Nali City as of Friday, November 2nd. BU and NC admins work feverishly to get the BU version of Nali City ready, even if it's just a static site with a functional search engine, news engine and downloads that still point to FilePlanet, so that the Unreal-engine community can have uninterrupted access to the world's most complete collection of Unreal and UT maps.

Also in November, GSI states that they cannot continue to host the Nali City files in their current location. I implore them to keep the files online and available, even with new download locations, stating that we can modify our database to point to new locations in a very short amount of time. GSI replies that they'll look into it. I also ask about working out a 'push mirroring' methodology of some sort. GSI suggests that we use the FilePlanet submission page. This, of course, is not practical, as we get too many files sent to Nali City. I ask again for them to look into it. No reply as of yet.

That's where we are today, November 3, 2001. If GSI will either leave the files where they are or provide us with a new linking method, we'll be able to provide you with the existing database of files. If they are willing to work with us to provide a mirroring system that's practical, we'll be able to grow the site again (we have like 175 maps in queue that aren't posted yet). In any event, we have plans for our own mirroring system, and will have that in place before too long.

It's important for everyone to understand a couple of points:

1) GSI is terminating Nali City on PU, not me.
2) The decision on whether or not the PU Nali City maps folders are maintained and/or added to is completely up to GSI.
3) BeyondUnreal will have our own file mirroring/download system in place at some point. This system may or may not include FilePlanet, depending on whether GSI is willing to work with us or not.
4) I am 100% committed to Nali City's success, regardless of what GSI decides to do.

I always did want to be in the rebel Alliance.

It had nothing to do with Princess Leia, of course. Oh no ;)

GSI?

Well, I'm not unhappy NC moves away from PU... After all they didn't want to host my homepage! And since I got it hosted at Unrealism one week ago, I've already had about 650 hits. Grrrrr...
Anyways I'm sorry for you about all the work on top of creating NC3 - but I guess the community will gladly wait, even if it takes a month or more to get the whole stuff finished. We're with you! At least, I am. NC has always been the heart of the community, and will stay so whatever server it's on!

Greetings from Luggage and Hail to the community! Keep up the good work!

one question,

how is BU fonded? not from some ads?

I'm sure you mean funded. :)

Pete and some others are chipping in out of personal funds. The ads...if you get something from the sites the ads advertise, Pete gets bling bling to fund the site. So, buy that RAM, people! ;)

Is it basically the case that Nalicity is being punished for involvement with BU?

More or less, yes. Many of the admins of NC were loyal to the cause of the PuF community, and, obviously, some had ties to Pete from his days as NC and PU admin. GSI appears to be firebombing PU to hell now.

Oh yay more anti-GSI nonsense.

The move went nice and smooth. Especially the forums... but getting our posts back will be joyous as well :p

He's talking about GSI deleting all of the NC maps on their FTP servers, without prior warning. I think that is a valid reason to bash GSI...don't you? Or do you feel GSI is right to delete thousands of custom maps?

Luckily, QAPete and the NC crew had some foresight and backed up the data. How much they saved, I'm not sure. GSI pretty much cleaned out the mapping history of Unreal and UT...
