I'm going to have to lean against Gearbox now.

When I first heard of this game like a month ago it sounded amazing. Now it just seems like it sounds amazing on paper. It has many good selling points, but the more gameplay videos I watch, the more exceedingly boring it actually seems. It looks like an endless bunch of loot quests in the same environment, until you finally give up on getting a better gun realizing the enemies will level with you and put you right back in the same spot you just were. How many times are you going to throw that turret out before you get sick of it? And from what I've heard, all the weapon sounds are weeeeeeeak. I'm hoping that's just internet audio, but who knows. Really though it seems like just a bunch of ideas from other games cobbled into one. MMORPG quests, leveling up like every other game, open world, Serious Sam-like giant monsters, and despite the emphasis on the art it all looks gray, brown and blue to me.

The DLC seems like a joke. How creative are the guys at Gearbox? Zombies? To me that just screams that they are trying to cash in on a current trend. This is great for business, but I don't want to play a game that is just cashing in. I want to play something unique. People aren't stupid, they know they've seen everything here before (except maybe the weapon-gen system, which in all honesty will be the coolest part of the game). Years ago no one would have thought of selling mini-updates to the game. Apparently DLC is the way to go these days, and since other devs are doing it it must be alright for everyone. As if the $60 price tag isn't ridiculous in it's own right.

To sum up: Borderlands now seems lame, and DLC blows hard.

We shall see.:)

Man I can't believe Gearbox is making a game about SHOOTING people with GUNS. That **** is so overdone!

Shooting people with guns in video games really is just about the most overdone thing on the planet.

EDIT - Not to say it's not fun. I still play Counter Strike ffs.

The shooter market is very saturated with games that promise everything but ultimately deliver the same kind of experience as the last shooter you played.
The subtle differences are usually something that's been rehashed and repackaged and sold as something different but in the end - it's a shooter.
Borderlands artwork is really nice and some neat things done with the Unreal Engine but I am curious to see how the game is received and how it stacks up to all the other shooters out there at the moment.

I just hope it keeps my f**king attention. Fallout 3 was pretty decent but after playing it exclusively for awhile I just stopped randomly in the middle of some quest and haven't launched the game again since.

T2a', I experienced the same thing in Fallout 3, mostly due to two things:

1) Setting. When your entire world consists of stuff that is either blown up or 'dangerous', there's not a whole lot of leeway to make interesting parts of the world. Everything automatically has to look broken down, abandoned and unfriendly. Even Megaton, a pretty cool idea in practice, was bland. It's a bit like horror survival games: if it wasn't for your interest in the gameplay, your gut reaction would be to stop playing. It's an unfriendly, unnerving setting.

Seeing as Borderlands shares a similar setting/plot, I hope they did a bit of a better job in making the game world fun instead of just 'cool'. I'm not advocating nintendoey happyhappyfuntown instances, but you get my point.

2) The game mechanics themselves. I love RPG's, don't get me wrong, but generally I want one or the other: Either I have to aim myself and how much damage I do depends on stats (Oblivion, Fable, etc) or the aiming is done for me and whether I hit or miss depends on stats (Neverwinter Nights).

When a game makes me aim and fight myself, yet I can still miss due to some stats, things become frustrating. What you're seeing on-screen doesn't match what is actually happening. Heck, what you're telling the game to do is not even what is actually happening.
Examples include Fallout 3, Morrowind (widely criticized for it's craptastic melee combat).
I, for one, just don't feel particularly in control of what happens anymore, the same way I would if a game had excessive cone of fire and no way to control it.

--

Seeing as how Borderlands has a focus on guns (with the whole weapon customizing thing), I'd expect they have 'fixed' (I don't know if this is a problem for anyone else) number 2.

I guess I'll see soon. I'm still going to get the game, I'm just not that hyped about it. Then again, I haven't been hyped about a game since probably Quake 4, so I've learnt my lesson.

First Person Shooters and Co-Op play just seem to have got stale and old real fast for me and I see development in this type of franchise going the same way - nothing new or inovative.
Had it not been for the stylized artwork, I find it really difficult to see what Borderlands offers over loads of other titles that deliver essentially the same thing - there's just nothing there that really grabs me at the moment.

Why are you people who don't like the game still posting in this thread?
And at the same time would you stop doing the same exact thing for Unreal Tournament 3 and any other game you don't like?

If you still play counter strike, your entire point in completely invalidated. :)

You know, when I was reading about Borderlands, I felt myself drifting off to sleep. Randomized weapon creation and loot drops doesn't really do anything for me and yet another open world game is pretty much yawn inducing. Then the latest gameplay videos came out and started convincing me. While, sure, it's another shooter, it seems to have taken a pretty unique approach and looks to be quite fun.

Oh, and that video was pretty funny, Mozi

Borderlands for PC is still not on the torrents but the 360 version has at least eight public trackers running thus far.

DRM.

Actually, T2A, the fact that the PC version (which includes the DRM) is not on torrents, yet the 360 version (which is unable to have the additional types of DRM PC games can) is, DOES actually validate DRM a bit, because it takes a little while to crack.

Well, the fact that the PC version is delayed by one week has something to do with it not being up on torrent trackers...
The amount of DRM included will never stop piracy once it hits the shelves on PC.
The delay serves no purpose though. If 2K wanted to maximize profit and minimize piracy for a week, they should have only released the PS3 version on the 20th and Xbox-PC on the 26th.

I don't know about all of the streams Kantham posted, but the Brandon505 guy managed to get a copy early because the store he was at had it on the shelf early.

Correct. Quite a few also have got it via broken release dates.
Does 2K even care, or even make a move?

The amount of streams is probably multiplied by 3 now.
