They didn't formally declare war on us, but there wasn't any other option. Afghanistan was more or less justified, but we should have stayed there instead of hopping off to find some more darkies to democratise.

Pretty much what Sam said. They harbored Osama bin Laden and the terrorist who attacked the United States (a.k.a. the guys who did 9/11 among other terrorist attacks on the u.s.). While not a direct declaration on war, they were helping the terrorist and refused to stop them, we gave them a chance before invading and they basically told us to **** off. So they pretty much wanted a war.
