ok let me clear this up for you guys and ive then this throughout this thread.

Unreal 2 and UT2004 run on the same ****ing engine.

there are minor differnences and tweaks but none is far better than the other. if u dont blieve me head on over to http://udn.epicgames.com/Powered/WebHome and see for youself

oh but ask any of these 2k4 players and they will tell you that ut2k4 engin is 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000x better then the one used in xmp even though they are the same engin with some minor tweaks

hell i can get xmp running better for most people with a ini file no joke takes a couple seconds and can gain up to 30 fps (around that)

the main issue with xmp core is that it needs some tweaking it self to work better on amd systems not to say it cant be played on amd i have seen it run at 30fps on a duron 866 with 9500pro card at 1024x768 its all about the tweaking with current xmp

if xmp it self could be updated (would have to convence atari to give the code to a team willing to do the work) then there would be no point in a mod but these moders would rather make a utxmp that will likely be ut with some xmp like things added

I really really hope that the vehicles in UTXMP will behave exactly like those in U2XMP.

Ok, maybe that's a bad thing for the majority of the gaming population, because they will never be able to drive in this game (look above).
I myself had done arti runs with the harbie very often. The horn is addictive. When driven correctly it is faster than any class player on foot, even in rough terrain. And when downhill there's no contest.
Look I'm clearly not saying the vehicle physics is for everyone. It is for people who understand it and therefore can drive it. The cars are already such an advantage, if they were any easier to drive, XMP would end up dominated by car thieves.

I understand and sympathize anyone who cannot drive in XMP. It isn't easy. But just because most people don't like it doesn't mean it needs fixing. If that was the case in real life we would not have manual transmission anymore (scary thought).

If a whole bunch of people who don't play XMP wants UTXMP to be completely changed to suit their taste, they might as well make another mod called something other than XMP. If you don't like my party, throw your own, don't take over mine, I beg you.

think making the harby a little more stable and making the rap a little less prone to spinout would be fine but overall they are fine just sick of harby doing the tipsy buss like thing :p

Adjusting the harbie's physics and such is one aim that cXp has. Never even considered doing something to the Raptor and Juggernaut. But the Harby unfortunately does need a lil fine tuning.

You say that as if it's an accomplishment. Even the Jugg can outrun a tech or a gunner in most situations.

And by the way, "driving is for people who understand it" is pretty much the same attitude as the Master of Orion 3 gamers who still fail to realize that the game was a total bomb.

Here's a little spoiler for you:

We did ask Atari and Epic if we could continue with XMP development, similarily to the team that does this for UT. However, they refused.

Did you get that? I'll repeat it just in case:

We did ask Atari and Epic if we could continue with XMP development, similarily to the team that does this for UT. However, they refused.

Here's some more:

We asked to continue development BEFORE the whole UTXMP stuff came up. So please. Stop talking out of your ass.

Wow, this thread has enough stupid infighting to supply a short bus for a week.

Raptor and crew, I appreciate and support your efforts. You'll be introducing many new people to XMP, like myself, and I'm sure the XMP community (well, the debis anyway) will appreciate it too.

riiiight - utxmp is coming unless something happens, so we can stop bashing em on it. Now get with the program and help either XMP or UTXMP - beta, map, model, do sound stuff, skin, or just idle by waiting for the new **** - but enough of this splitting and dividing of the community.

Because the direction that the engine went in U2 sucked, in 2k4 it improved a few minor things can change allot.

In U2XMP I get 25 fps max.... regardless of detail settings or ini tweaks that's horrid. In 2k4 in a full blow ONS map with hordes of players and things on screen I get about 60 fps with details at max.

This is on a 3.2 P4, 2 gigs of ram, abit IC7-g mobo, with a ati radeon 9700 pro.

I am not the only one with this problem. This problem is rampant, even on the atari forums the legend guys fessed up that for some damn reason the game just ran like **** on some peoples high end systems for no good reason. And for some god forsaken reasons some people have horrible pings and lag. The reason that was given was the cpu requirements of the server it's being run on.

you are the only 1 with that problem. I get about 40-60 fps on average on every map. Could be your motherboard.

I have 2.6 p4, 512ram, asus p4p800s, asus radeon 9600xt

All of my settings are set to the max.

they didn't just change a few minor things they rewrote most of the netcode
Which allows for 32 players with over 20 vehicles in use and still ping around 50 with low CPU useage.

They also did some other big optimizations as well as VOIP and voice Reg which they had to rewrite alot of the sound stuff for.

Ut2k4 can also has big terrain optimizations, most ut2k4 maps are 256x256 some even 512x512 i think in xmp all the maps apart from 1 (sirroc) use 128x128 becuase the performance hit is big.

As for all the harbie tip and raptor spin out complains... driving 101, if you think you're losing control of the car, slow down.
I do not think the harbie tips over unless you're steering towards a slope, or bump, or curb, or big rock, or anything that can tip over a car.
I do not think the raptor spins out unless someone insists on turning under full throttle on a rocky trail.
I understand in many games, you're not supposed to let go of gas EVER, but XMP isn't one of them...

And Worf, I mentioned the Harbie arti run to demostrate that the cars do their job very well. And thank you for pointing out that even the Jugg can be very useful. Personally I sometimes get in the Jugg, boost, get out, destroy it, and run. When done properly it does give you a bit more distance from your pursuers.
As for the comments about Master of Orion 3, I have never played the game. But saying they "fail to realize that the game was a total bomb" is the same as saying your opinion is the undisputed law of the universe, and others with different opinions are simply "not realizing it".

Ok.

So what sort of changes can we expect, engine-wise, in the conversion then?

Like, I know so far it's known that there is no GOLEM or Salamander particles. But most of that can be re-created as GOLEM is just animation and UT2004 has a particle system (which is better than the UT2003 one i've heard). Oh that and the phyiscs code is different too, unless Epic coded the vehicles different from Legend.

What other sort of differences under the hood can we expect to see?

What it means, is that an overly complex game, that is automated to the point where the game basically plays you, that was never fully patched or fully documented, is still praised as genius on the Atari forums by all ten people who still play it.

I played it and tried as hard as I could to enjoy it, but it's simply not engaging. It's like playing an algebra test.

Indeed, the harbinger isn't a terain vehicle, it isn't fitted for bumpy lands. Maybe thats just how it is? Maybe it's not because Legend optimised it wrong... On flat ground it's even faster than the raptor!

And the ratpor. Yes it doesn't spin unless you make it. Hell it's a really stable vehicle if you know how to drive. But I can admit that sometimes when you jump from cliffs and land. The car can sometimes bump away to unaturall directions... like backwards, if anything - this should have a fix...

You forgot to mention the part where if you drive the raptor up any sort of incline it tends to favor the direction of the hillside, end result, you often fishtail or start driving backwards and sideways and getting turned six ways from Sunday.

People don't excuse walking as a skill to be mastered, they think (even if they're not consciously aware of it) that it should be intuitive. Apparently if controls are not intuitive, it is now the user's problem and not the designer's. :tup"
