Of course it makes sense. If money is the root of all evil ( which it isnt, it is the symptom not the cause ), then get rid of it by giving it to a good cause, or at least making sure it cant do any harm, which is what a tithe does.
I agree with the rest of what you said though...when people start to blame god for anything, they have gone too far. The very begining of the Bible should make it clear that anything that goes wrong ( or right ) is our fault, because we have free will, quite apart from any common sense or moral thinking.
