What would revive the UT franchise?

I've been playing l4d2, and it's the same engine as the first. Same gameplay. They fixed bugs, tweaked stuff, and added stuff. It's great. It's one of the best sequels I've ever played.
L4D is the same engine, but massively upgraded in some key areas, hence why L4D2 runs much more poorly than L4D.

Only one time ever have i seen a PS2 copy of UT99 in a gamestop for 2$ so i bought it and it didnt work :p

I actually have that version. It's obviously worse than the PC version though, since it contains less maps and has analog control.

As a final note, if you can't support the game with your own talents (or lack thereof), then you might as well uninstall the game and leave the Unreal series for good, because it's obvious you don't care one bit for the game. And don't tell me "oh, but it's hard to mod for." Bullsh*t! If you really cared for the game, you would be willing to overcome any obstacle to keep the game alive. Otherwise, don't even bother.

I don't know what's more stupid, this statement, or the (bold) line in your signature.

Probably unlike you, most U(T) fans have a reasonable social life besides playing the games, and learning how to mod takes a lot of time so they won't bother.

It plays fine on the same machine I played L4D on. I can't say the same about UT3 and UT2k4.
Man, not me... are you using the same settings? For me I get lots of chugging in lots of different areas. Part of it is VC drivers. Other part of it is just the engine enhancements.

The problem is that this could revive the Unreal franchise, not the Unreal Tournament franchise.

It's my personal belief that this story is what gave UT it's start, and deathmatch and several multiplayer game types were available with the original unreal, UT is simply the multiplayer of unreal with out the campaign.

UT is simply set in the future from the original story.

I might be wrong, not to argue, it's just my opinion.:)

Not taking time to be a modder does not mean you are stupid, but at the same time if you are a modder that doesn't make you a misfit either, I am learning to mod, and you are right I have more time but it is because I have become disabled, I am still a person and I don't feel like I am smarter than people who don't take the time to learn how to mod either.

And you think the Unreal 1 community is any different? I know I don't have a life, and I don't care to have a life, but a lot of people on Old Unreal have lives. Nearly every single person who supported Unreal was going to college, had jobs, etc. and yet they still supported the game in their free time. Smirftsch, the guy who got the 227 patch started in the first place, is paying for the site both out of his own pocket and out of donations, and yet he's still able to help support the game. And for a community with lives, they sure complain a hell of a lot in their free time.

And if those disgruntled UT fans can't bother to mod the game themselves, then good riddance.

By the way, the statement in my signature is supposed to be stupid. You really think I made that to be serious?

Oh, and before you call me out for being a hypocrite, I like UT3. I still play it every now and then. I don't complain about it because I think Epic did a fair job on it.

I pretty much just let the game auto config, so yeah. I may turn a thing up here or there.

Last time I bought hardware was for UT3, so anything bought with that in mind, I usually don't have trouble running other games on.

I would occasionally get some stutter on both games, but increases in ram seemed to have tamed it a bit. Vid would freeze, audio would loop, and it would never lock, just pause me for a sec, and then go again.

You're doing better than me, although I turned the settings up a bit.

Quad Core Intel Q6600
2GB DDR2
8800GTS 320MB

Could be the video card ram, perhaps.

What if Epic could create an 'epic-store' (think apple app store; psn; etc..) of user-created maps, mutators, characters and gametypes, and more.. and allow a market where content-creators could find another motivation in create, sell, play their creations (and Epic could also sell specialized extra content that could enhance process to both creators and consumers)?

As I have seen the 'play, create, share' model being shown from titles like Little Big planet, ModNation racers, and of the like.. (though quality-assurance of content is of consideration; unless there is some way to follow similar path like Apple's or Sony's way of 'evaluating' and approving content).

That would only hinder mod devs. It would be better to have an environment where mods can be distributed freely. I don't see how such a system would help.

The game may not run as fast on l4d did for me or reach the maximum fps, but the average frame rate seems to be much smoother, even in hoards in the sequel.

Fair enough, I just felt you crossed the line by stating that I should uninstall UT3 if I didn't want to take the time to support it.
fyi, I'm still playing the game every now and then (and thus supporting it, I suppose), mostly Warfare, and I'm sure as hell not uninstalling any of my Unreal games anytime soon :D

Indeed, that's not the way to go, what we could use, however, is a good one-stop site for mods and maps, instead of having them scattered amongst many smaller ones, some of which are fairly obscure, or even loosely scattered on hosting sites like Megaupload and Filefront where nobody will find them, unless they allready know what to look for.

If Epic where to support the hosting of such a site, that'd be great, and then maybe we woulden't loose so many mods in the future (hell knows there are many Unreal mods, and a fair few UT ones, even a few 2k3 and 2k4 mods, that are just not out there anymore, because the sites they where on went balls up).
Epic woulden't even have to do anything active, just help cover the cost of keeping the site up, i'm certain they could find people who would run it for them.

Some sort of custom content management in the game would be great, although I doubt it would revive the franchise. Sort of like Firefox's add-on management, maybe add some stats and ratings, checking for updates, etc.

One of the drawbacks of custom content in UT3 is that it's so large, but for people who can afford the bandwidth it would be great to have a nice central location to either get stuff from directly, or get referrals from. I've been downloading the maps from MSUC phase 3, and it's a significant pain in the ass with capped bandwidth and Fileplanet's aversion to Firefox. The previews that people put together for movies on torrent sites could be an example of how to provide more info to people so they can decide what to skip.

The user experience could definitely be improved, but I guess the benefit vs cost is not good enough to justify it.

A Linux version of the game might revive it in some circles. All the big competitors to UT3 that people talk about are on Windows.

Using it as an advertising vehicle for other games could also be a win. I'd still like to see some of the Mass Effect characters, for example, ported to UT3.
