Try running around a bit, then type in:

set xpawn groundspeed 352

Which one feels more "UT1-ish" to you? I need help here, cause 320 feels way too slow for me.

Parser, in very 'unscientifical' testing I found you maybe need to bump it up higher than 352 to get UT1 speed.

Is there a more precise way to compare speeds between the two games? I tried timing runs on some straight stretches in Spot's DM-Oblivion port in comparison with the same stretches in UT1 but then I had to reduce the UT2k3 groundspeed to 300 or below to get the same times, so that doesn't seem right.

Are you sure the illusion of speed isn't confusing you? What I mean is the UT models have a wider leg spread while running and the UT2003 have shorter leg spreads. The shorter leg spread animation makes the models appear they are running faster...if you understand what I mean.

I think the best thing to do is make cube (plain grey texture) big enough to allow the models to run. Start at one wall (with their back against it), run to the other until they hit it. Record the times for each model.

I resemble that remark..

You ARE a delusion of grandeur? I don't know how else you could resemble it...

As for what Proph just said: That won't work until you fix the pmodel scale, aye?

So how will we be able to tell the difference between 2K3 ports and UT ports? We will have to know.. there is no sense having a 1.25 scaled 2k3 ported map in a UT99 mod because we didn't know which file to download. We will need a definite distinction between the ports. For Face, name it ctf-ut99-face or ctf-face-ut99 or think something up and name all the maps in this fashion. Get what im saying?

One last post. sorry. Okay guys, you obviously have no idea how to handle the criticisms of this project. Did you ever stop to think that maybe they WANT you to reply to their messages? I mean, let them post their message and THEN start replying to them after the mod is all done and see if they stick with their previous assumptions. We can't just force them into thinking our way, we have to prove it to them.

Darn skeptics.

Yes! It's about time people had the cajones to ignore all the "go play UT1" wankers and get to work on this. This mod would have been done a good 6 months after UT2k3 came out if it weren't for all the negative people discouraging everyone from doing it. If I can think of something I can help with, I'll try to participate. I think the biggest things to do are the player movement/scale, and the weapon look/feel, but I wouldn't mind some old characters returning, like the Mercs. :) Of course the pac-man pills as well need the boot, and the adren combo's... Weee this will be sweet, I can't wait! :D

i think the maps names should be something along the lines of:

CTF-UT-*Map Name*

forget ut99, ut1 or anything else u call it.

or even better..
TUT-CTF-*Map Name*
So the UT ports cant even be run, or seen while playing 2k3.
The maps will play badly anyway, no since in cluttering up the menus.

I got off work late again.
Im going to do another room in Oblivion, and then hit the hay.

Ive got Coret well underway (working title CTF-Coret99.unr) but that can be changed at any point until release :)

Im porting this with the original scale and various textures transferred across (although the textures have been compressed with DXT1). Blue base is currently textured with 80% UT textures and 20% UT2k3 textures, various small decorations like lights have had BSP brushes replaced with similar static meshes.

Im currently getting at least 150fps during play (without bots) using the same settings that get me around 60fps in standard UT2k3 maps :2thumb:

Uh oh...

I just received this back from Mark Rein..

Mark,

Sorry but we can NOT give you permission to do this. The end user license
agreements for Unreal Tournament restrict you from using its content in any
game other than the one it came with. That means you can't use UT content in
UT2003 or UT2004.

Mark Rein
Epic Games Inc.

Ill keep on this, and ask what will be required for it to be allowed.
Not giving up yet...

The only other alternitive is to build it all from scratch.
That pretty much puts me out of it.

Like I said, Im not giving up on it yet.
Ill continue with what Im doing and poke um a few more times....

Surely this can only refer to textures etc then?

I know many maps have already been ported to 2k3 complete with textures and music from UT - this really is an extension of that.

Maybe its best to get as far as we can to capture the UT feel then submit the mod to epic - if they have problems with any specific part they can complain and we'll amend as necessary

They allowed the Quake>UT mod (UnrealArena ?) to be done so surely this is very similar to that - we just may not be able to use UT textures/music

Basically this mod will only encourage to 90% of my UT clanmates to make use of their copies of 2k3 which they hate

Id very much doubt that any of them will consider buying 2k4 unless there is something like this mod which will allow them to have the gameplay they love but in the new engine

All this is doing is widening the target audience after all

Ive just sent another email to Mark.

Basicly asking what we can do to get by the EULA, and if not, would Epic persue legal action if we did it without thier permission.

I didnt really think of this till now, but it opens up Epic for legal action if they officialy allow us to proceed.

I myself am going to continue working on my stuff.
Ill let you know the reply if/when it comes...

OK, now this is really shocking. Normally I have nothing but good things to say about Mark, but this time.... Sorry Mark, but giving the Quake community permission to recreate UT using the Quake III engine, but then deny your own community the opportunity to create UT using the latest Unreal engine is just...asinine. Mark, please excuse my lack of restraint, but that is plain bull****!

The UT EULA "restricts" this team from using the UT contents in any game other than Unreal Tournament? Then what the hell is Quake III using...the UT engine?

Spot, let me know what he says...I plan on sending him an email as well...not to mention a nicely written news post about how the EULA is binding for the Unreal fans, but not so for the Quake III fans.

?? Who will submit legal action against who? Epic going to sue DE? DE going to sue Infogrames/Atari? All three going to sue each other? Hello...they all had a hand in making and publishing both games.

Doesn't matter to me really. The fact is, they were able to give one mod team permission and it used a totally different engine. Yet, Mark is denying the Unreal community permission to create a mod using, what is basically the same damn engine (albeit highly modified). This is...surreal (no pun intended).

Id advise that we keep one person speaking for the mod. I dont care who it is.
Im willing to keep the thing going, but Id like it if others involved with this MOD back off. I dont want them to blow us off, and they will ignore any emails in bad taste that critsizes the way they do things.

If Epic were to give us official permission to make the mod, and it takes off, then in theory, we would be able to ask for compensation if there is a dramatic increase in revenue from it. I dont expect nor want that and Ive agreed to sign a contract stateing so.
The compensation thing happens alot actually. I believe Netscape was first to be screwed by its online "helpers" and it screwed it for us all.

All I have to do is have them hint that they wont take legal action if we persue the mod, and thats enough for me.

Plz do not send any critsizing emails till this come to some sort of closure.
Then go get them if you feel the need.

Thx!
