UT2003 / UT2004 Network Compatability To Be Broken

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Dunno. Actually just reinstalled a zipped install of the orig ut, about 4.8GB. Simple had enough of UT2K3. Yea it's eye candy, but not good enough. Unless UT2K4 has a lot new to offer, prob will be the last of the series. End up going the way of the unreal series, sad.

From a girls point of view the orig rocked, fell back in 2003, am staying away from 2004, they lost my full support.

Well UT99 is still on top of UT2k3 and if they use the same crap they did for 2k3 then i wont expect much

As RegularX pointed out, I love it how people continuously forget that making games is an occupation. Occupation = (ideally) doing something you love and making a living off of it.

These are humans people, just like us, and they need to make a living. Making games costs money, in the millions now-a-days. These people are in it because they love making games, yes, but they are also in it because it's their INCOME as well. So please, give them some slack, quit acting like it's the end of the world that this world isn't perfect, or if you can't do that, go found your own gaming company that we can whine and bitch and moan about.

No ... the ones working at Epic must be at least demi-gods ... or at the very least Epic-level gamedesigners. ;)
(ok so that's a lame D&D-joke ... I'm a geek what else did you expect :D :p)

Oh and by the way :

*NOBODY* is forcing you to upgrade your mods to UT'04 !!!!
let me repeat again ...

This sounds really sad and will take the fun out of what i was hoping for. But im sure if they did it might run slower because of all the servers runing with lots of people playing online. This way people can play at the same bandwidth so it will run smoother. Judging by the videos i have downloaded it seems the levels will be much bigger and the users modems will have much more to keep up with.

Actually, if you read more on UT2004 you'd know that this incompatibility is caused by the netcode performance being enhanced - the game will run -faster- not slower.

And that must be the first time I've heard someone complain that there might be too -many- people playing UT online.

Can we get a thread lock here? We've got nothing but paranoia and rumor at this point. Modders - you are in the same boat as before. UT2003 players - you were always going to be behind the eight ball to upgrade, you know it, I know it, we all know it - so just deal with it. UT2004 fans - be happy the game is being so improved. UT people who hate UT2003 - this has nothing to do with you, so go complain somewhere else.

First of all: Doc_EDo, please STFU. :p
Second thing: Everyone who doesn't know about UnrealScript coding stop making asumptions, they are usually wrong.

Breaking network compatibility (i.e. making two different versions of the same thing not understand each other in a network game) has absolutely nothing to do with breaking binary compatibility (i.e. making an add-on that was compiled with an earlier version of the game not work with a later version unless it's recompiled).

Examples:
UT and UT2003 are neither binary nor network compatible. (makes sense)
Unreal Tournament is binary compatible to Unreal, i.e. stuff compiled for Unreal will also work in UT.
Unreal Tournament is also network compatible to Unreal, i.e. if you wanted you could play on Unreal servers using Unreal Tournament.
UT2004 will be binary compatible to UT2003, but not network compatible. You can play UT2003 mods in UT2004, but you can't play on UT2003 servers with UT2004, that's all that was stated in the news post.

I really don't know who started the rumor of UT2003 mods not working with UT2004.

No NEED

The demo of the game is still amasing so i dont think there is any need crying about the conections between ut 03 and 04. UT 04 includes all new kinds of features

Unreal Tournament 2003 & 2004 not compatible

[UPDATE] Epic's Tim Sweeney says network code changes will prevent backwards compatibility.

Having already suffered through a six-month delay, gamers awaiting Unreal Tournament 2004 are apparently in store for another unpleasant surprise. In an e-mail sent to Unreal Tournament mod authors yesterday, Epic MegaGames founder/president Tim Sweeney revealed that UT 2004 will not be network compatible with Unreal Tournament 2003. "We had initially planned to support that," said Sweeney, "but the network code has changed so much--in order to reduce bandwidth, support vehicles, and increase performance--that we couldn't keep the two games network-compatible."

Thats odd because I was able tyo get (with some help) alot of the content I made from a 2003 mod I was working on, to work fine in ut2004 DEMO<---

No issues at all. Had to do some work-arounds...not many though.

I'm sure a bunch of people are willing to answer your question if you post it in its own thread in the appropriate location. This thread is not the place to discuss such topics.
