Unwheel is looking good so far, but the bots seem a bit wierd in race mode. Does anyone know a game mode or map that works well with bots?

All maps are properly pathed. Bots just do not work well in race mode no matter what, they are overly aggressive or completely retarded. We asked Epic about it,they said it's something to do with UT2004 bot code. In the next ut2004 patch they will be addressing and hopefully fixing this issue.

Bots work very well in CTF, KBall and Rabbit game modes.

Yeah, I found the bots in Race Mode driving in circles or pulling forward then backing up over and over. I hope that gets fixed by Epic. :)

One thing you also might want to look at is on maps like Lost Gods there are places where you can get stuck (pillars) and forced to reset your vehicle. You might want to consider using blocking volumes to prevent players from getting wedged into places. Just hitting a wall can be enough to really slow a player down.

As for maps, I said in a post about your previous release that I'd give making one a try if that's alright. Expect beaches, cliffs, tunnles, water, etc.

While i agree with the control of vehichles for balance reason, i know no cars in any racing games or real life that turn into spinning fireballs of death after hitting a rock at 30 mph, ok not flaming, but spinning....alot. Maybe farther down the road you could refine all fo that? =P

This has'nt happed often but sometimes, players win races - but dont complete all rounds. I was playing Lost gods earlier - was at the front of the race right from the start... no-one overtook me - but I didnt end up winning... This also happened on Sherwood and Pavillion.

I'd also love to see more rally tracks... just two atm :(

Me to. Templerun rocks. Also why is there no servers for Rally, can't u make one of the 2 official race ones (that are usually empty) do rally.

One thing I notice regualrly as me and my brother play online at the same time (we can see each others screens) is the hud showing posistions. its not accurate. Usually first place is accurate but not always, is it possible to get a more accurate display.

Also the engines on the monster trucks are very quiet / silent. we want more NOISE!!!! nice big burbling fuel guzzling neighbour annoying engines please. lol

If you are somehow able to get the centepede on it's back then you are out of luck, it isn't able to be flipped back over with the flip key.

Also, many people have been asking for a way to switch vehicles without loosing their score in the middle of the game.

I was playing CTF and while I had the flag I went into spectate mode, I droped the flag but then no one was able to pick it back up afterward.

One more thing, if a player is using a long name then it can get cut off in the mini scoreboard in the lower right, and the part that gets cut off shows up on the left side of the screen.

Right behind you.
And since I like to play rabbit with a score limit of 150 we need to extend the mini scoreboard on the bottom to handle such high scores.

a mutator or option to drive backwards through the maps and/or mirror them would be nice
NFS2 had that option :)

Hey guys, just downloaded your mod the other day and gave it a spin with my buddy on our LAN and Online. To start, I am a huge FPS and FPS MOD fanatic, it's all I play. I've always been hot for FPS racing mods because I think they've had alot of untapped potential ever since the QRally days (and beleive me, I played alot of QRally). Most recently HLRally was kicked out of the womb and fell upon the internet like oh so many digitally aborted mods, and that was rather dissapointing. That left me with one place to look for a great racing mod, UnWheel! Thankfully you've all done a LOT of work since the first release I downloaded from the website long ago, and it shows!

General car handlings mechanics and graphics are excellent. The control scheme is kept simple and the camera options aren't too complicated either. Some of the maps could use a little more polish, but for the most part I think it looks very nice. When the gameplay works at its best it is a lot of fun, I enjoy most all of the modes of play.

Doh, half my post got cut off! Grr :)
Things I would like to see in future updates or semi-buggish material:

Better acceleration/deceleration mechanics and sounds. This was mentioned before, but sometimes the revving sound is really way overdone and played out after you crash or slow down substantially in a short amount of time. Not really that big of a deal IMO.

Vehicle Health Status and ability to die / explode. I like the cars showing damage effects with smoke and fire, but I don't see why they don't wreck. I would like to see this implemented for multiple reasons. One, it would help or could be automatically applied to 'stale' cars that are left on the track by disconnects, and the other in certain gameplay instances. One, when you are going incredibly fast (even full HP) and you run into a wall head on and just sit there... with your tires spinning incredibly fast still. Very unrealistic. I'd rather just get exploded and be reset, because the effect of doing a 3point turn to back up and get on the track is bad enough anyways! I suppose I just like to go out in a fiery explosion as often as possible ;) Other areas where it would help are general caution, I kind of try to not catch on fire but it would be great on the last leg of a race to have to be really careful not to spin out and get rammed otherwise you'll just lose it and explode :)

Vehicle Queue for all maps, so the first person to pick a car doesn't haul ass in front of everyone. That is probably the most annoying thing, because all race maps are broken by this mechanic or lack thereof.

Maybe an anti-camping timer (tied in with the explosion? :) ) for point based objectives and AFKs / disconnected vehicles.

More extensive clipping regions on the maps, I've gotten in some really weird spots :)

I'm not trying to rip on the mod, I think this mod is absolutely stellar - but this would put it over the top and definately into professional material. I don't play racing series (NFS/etc) for console or PC, but I'll play this so that's saying alot. Keep up the good work!

4, Not sure what you mean? Why only the rally car (which rally car?). I tried a rear view mirror a while ago, there were 2 problems, the first being the mirror was backwards, making it rather more confusing than useful, and the second being it doubles the number of polygons being drawn, so it effectively halves your FPS.
I don't know how well the engine handles LOD, or LOD in portals or mirrors (too bad you can't set the mirror to draw everything but only at 25% detail or some such). Apparently what you are saying is it doubles the entire scene (which makes perfectly good sense). However, maybe it could only show up if you were zoomed into the farthest position (inside the car) so you don't double up the rendering when you can't see it in 3rd person. Also, toggleable for high end systems and off by default, etc.

It is a good idea cause it can get tricky turning the camera around to see how many people are breathing down your neck :)

Yeah min. LOD and as a configurable option would be good, but it's still the wrong way around.

BTW while we're on about this sort of thing is there any way (short of changing the engine code) of writing frame-buffer distortions?

I agree with the race positions being off. I don't think it always shows the right position. Like how'd I go from 6th to 2nd when I only passed one person? Maybe there were others that went further off the track that I didn't see myself passing or something, but I generally got the impression that although it updated at each checkpoint, it was still inaccurate sometimes.

I also agree with the accel/decel issues...maybe have the vehicles retain their momentum just alittle better and maybe scale the brake application more gradually with the e-brake being a more sudden braking force? I like the acceleration the way it is, though because it works great for cornering when you want to induce a gentle drift that can usually be controlled.

I dunno about the anti-camping thing because I think that's just more of a player ettiquette type of thing. Like you don't see anti-camping stuff up in RW CTF do you? Don't waste your time...just deal with the ability to completely cover the goal area with vehicles like the centipede. Had to ban some jackass cuz he'd park a centipede on the goal area and then spectate, rejoin with another centipede, park it next to the other one and do it again till the whole thing was covered...lame. If his old one disappeared after he left, then it wouldn't be an issue.

On the subject of this, though, do you think it might be worthwhile to come up with a standard for the scoring area? Maybe it could be a chamber you pass through or something that you could incorporate an anti-camp thing like maybe you can't pass through it unless you have the flag or something? You know like how you know a node's a node because they all look the same...how about the cap area too? Could even just be a platform with a cylindrical "capture volume"?

Glad to hear about the resolution on starting races also. Maybe even go as far as to force players joining mid-race to spectate till the end of the race.

Anyways, keep up the great work, guys. I played an early build with 2K3 and it's come a long way. Vary sweet, indeed. :)

This is a pretty bad bug, UWKOTH-IceRing has extremely accurate collision on the ramps up to the Koth point and your wheels can fall through the grates! It's also a nightmare for the race cars.
