You can't anticipate them always, especially if they're in team. Mercenaries can go in God Mode even when you remotely try to aim at them with hitscan weapons (Unreal difficulty, mostly - great reaction time). This is seriously annoying in small environments, especially when they spam rockets.
Only other scripted pawns have the intellect to attack invulnerable Mercenaries... poor dumb Skaarj ;)

Unreal difficulty in Single Player can be sometimes harsh, even after 11 years of experience.

Replaying Unreal on Unreal difficulty right now, and coincidently arrived at Terraniux. Eightball grenades is good for the Mercenaries with 480 health or so, as they don't GodMode them. Unless you trigger the Rocket Lock-on (freaking unpredictable), they'll quickly activate the shield.

Well, I mainly learned to deal with them through coop play. We gave eachother tips, learned from one another, and teamwork does wonders. It's resulted in me playing the game totally differently. Had I stuck to pure single player well......it's always interesting seeing how other people play the game. You can learn an awful lot with the right people.

Mercs used to really bother me and I agree, they can be a pain. But nowadays I know how to handle them.

Besides, how many times do you have a merc waiting around a corner babbling vulgarities (? ;D...). Wait a second, and quickly take them out with the best available weapon. It really all comes down to timing.

We always play(ed) on the highest difficulty, same for monsterhunt. (that was even more insane). Took me a while to adjust, especially with mh, but it was worth the while.

They activate it even before the sounds. Just scripted when the Eightball begins the Lock-on countdown from the first second.
Reality-speaking, they know the danger of the rockets.

Unreal's gameplay is about timing.
I see a Mercenary's back? Rockets, Flak Shells or a charged BioBlob. Always satysfing.
I mostly use the Dispersion Pistol. I grown with that weapon and I love it so much. Makes the game (single player mode, probably) more interesting. It's great against everything except Queens, Warlords and Gasbags found far from you and that have realized of your presence.

Why? They don't hear it when you're sneaking behind them. Same for Eightball charging. Works even against the Skaarj.

Oh, that's good to know. I thought BioRifle alt had some MakeNoise()s. However, some enemies tend to look around so they might spot you even if you sneak from behind. Happened to me once while playing LAN co-op, a Skaarj ignored me so I left the PC, and when I returned, I saw him doing the "look to the sides" animation and it suddenly charged me...

Probably in Dasa Cellars. The only time where you can go nuts against everyone. That was the time where Myscha's real genious has worked, what a wonderful map.

Not only that, but yeah if you wanna save ammo you can use dp...or stinger on kralls, stinger is rather useless on harder enemies and against krall it is very effective.

Yeah, Skaarj totally dodge all Stinger shards. It excels at Tentacles, Pupae and Krall. And the Pulse Gun you get if you use OldSkool to play Unreal is a lot, lot more effective :)

The Pulse Gun is a horrible weapon for SP, except against bots.
The Stinger is pretty damn powerful against everyone. Secondary Fire to the Skaarj; case resolved.

Shooting anything but Dispersion Pistol bolts is a waste against the Krall :p

Not if your ammo slowly recharges with all weapons ;p
(It actually took a while finding the right timing for this. Cardi configured this. Really helpful) It saves tons of time in coop games. Think of all the time you lose running for a weapon, going back for ammo etc. errghhh...

Anyway, I save the rifle rounds especially for the krall. Or mercs and skaarjtroopers. Heck, and skaarjwarriors. Just love it when they violently shake their arms back and forth. And when the trooper reaches for its lost head.

Eh, bots in SP? And enemies get disrupted by the beam, at least on lower difficulties, so you can safely kill any Skaarj without a problem. And 3 shot tentacle = win.

Skaarj dodge the alt fire as well, and it takes ages to reload. And projectiles are so slow that most enemies dodge them, unless you're in melee range.

Rifle is good against Skaarj Troopers mostly. Cheap weapons vs cheap enemies sounds good. Same for the Warlord and the Mercenaries.

No, the Pulse Gun in SP is a useless weapon, especially in Unreal difficulty which I only play. The orbs are confusing and easily dodged, while the beam does not disrupt enemies, it makes them more aggressive like the Minigun's damage (especially Skaarj). Bots instead are stunned by the beam, and can't shoot with their weapons if are continuously damaged.
Oh, I am very pro with the Stinger. The reload time is perfectly balanced, and when you're close to the enemies they don't avoid the five-shards shot. Tentacles? DP only, seriously.
