i think the best team colors would be just change the colors of theblades and the eyes and the fangs/horn things......so it doesnt take away from metel robot type feel....thats just imo

In the shader the 2nd line gives you an option for an opacity, on that just make a greyscale image (with alpha) in the alpha make the blades 50% grey and everything else black (normally it would be white but I think it's black for the opacity)

Black = 100% opacity
50% grey = 50% opacity
white = 0% opacity

or

Black = 0% opacity
50% grey = 50% opacity
White = 100% opacity

If you use dxt5 then shading in the alpha channel makes it look pretty good.

You can do it several ways, but all needs an Alpha channel.

If you look at my masking tutorial you just have to follow that and then use the amount of grey you want instead of pure black.

White is 100% oppacity
Black is 0% oppacity

You don't have to use DXT5, DXT3 with an explicit alpha will more than do the trick. I usually uses a DXT1 with an 8bit alpha, it's perfect for masking and transparant parts.
You can use shapes in alpha channels too, just look at the specular shader on my Mithan. I used some extra detail textures on his alpha channel and it did a great effect.

You can also animate it with some panning textures but maybe that's a too big mouthfull for a newcomer to shaders :p
