Yep.

Si. Navy buys the toys, SOCOM gets to play with them. Same with the Army and Air Force. The only service with the balls to stand up is the USMC.

IMHO, the USMC does SOF right. Instead of wasting millions of dollars developing a training pipeline, and hundreds of thousands for every person going through the pipeline, they just train one regular infantry battalion to be special operations capable. MEU(SOC), it's cheap and it works.

Would make a damn good show though!

This conversation reminds me of that TV series they had awhile ago where they pitted various special forces teams like SAS and Force Recon against each other. They wore special suits and had special guns that sounded realistic and shot a laser beam that the other suits could detect... can't remember the damn name, all I know about it is that it wasn't shown here in Canada:(

Pretty much. It was the SWAT/HRT guys who tended to do the best, because they were the only ones who had actively trained within the past year. And man, some of the boys were out of shape like they'd been on the chips, beer, and TV exercise regimen. One of them could only do 45 pushups. That is lower than the bare-ass minimum for male Squids . One of the SWAT guys didn't know how to use a M16. They didn't come right out and say it, but if you watch closely, you'll notice he couldn't hit the broadside of a stationary barn and has trouble reloading. Kinda humorous, in a sad way.

If you liked that, you'd love "Hunting Chris Ryan"...

Celebrity SAS hardman Chris Ryan gets dumped somewhere inhospitable and has to complete a "mission" whilst being chased by a hunter force made up of ex-Royal Marines and ex-SEALs.

Last weeks episode was in Siberia and he came a hairs breadth away from dying of hypothermia.

HAHAHA!

But that show kinda sounds ridiculous. I mean, they must have camera crews following the guy everywhere, right?

That wasn't the worst of it. When it was down to the final three (a SEAL and two SWAT cops), they had a competition in which each of them had to run a distance, then stop and shoot two targets. The SEAL lost because he misused his weapon (an M4) and it malfunctioned, then he made a bad situation worse by beating his weapon on the ground until it was completely non-functional.

He failed to seat the magazine properly. Although I can't be 100 percent certain it was his fault because they were using some sort of transparent plastic magazines, but the other two guys had no problems. Anyway, after he put the magazine in he tried to chamber a round, it worked the first time, but then it failed to feed another round. So he started working the cocking handle repeatedly. All that accomplished was to shave bits of metal off of the round and force those bits into the chamber. After that he began slamming the buttstock into the ground. Which pretty much was the end of that particular chapter.

And they did really pull out some real old heads for the competition. Like when the Army Special Forces guy got hurt and they had to replace him. They got Ranger. Not just any run of the mill BlackHawk Down Ranger mind you, but a real live Vietnam era Ranger. I thought that was a mistake, but he did alright.

I think I watched that show like, twice. Ever. It was a good idea that turned out to be so hokey  that I couldn't hardly take it.

This "Hunting Chris Ryan" show, is that a BBC program? Never heard of it, wondered if mebbe BBCA would carry it.

Er... there isn't much more to tell.

It is a BBC programme. They seem to be showing a tonne of SAS themed stuff at the moment. I think we're just missing "Andy McNab extreme cooking challenge" and "Bravo Two Changing Rooms : The SAS home makeover"...

SOCOM is the logistical and adminitrative aspect that integtrates these forces (including Marines). The command structure is always the same. Its like when you go on a float and are now attached to that MEU command structure. Your regimental commander or Battalion or even first sergenat may not be part of it but a command structure is pulled form different units within the corps. SOCOM works the same. The command org chart for US Naval Special Warefare Units (Seals) goes from the units up to the US Naval Special Warfare Command which reports to the CNO. SOCOM pulls from these and other resources. It might interest you to know that Marines are part of SOCOM as a fighting force. Granted their introduction is new however, the Commandant thought the Force elements had allot to offer the SOCOM. Your correct about the Navy not needing Seals. Marines have been doing what they do for years and better. Just politics, the navy wanted some glory boys way back when.

Edit: I think you might find that if you told the Highest ranking man in the US Navy (CNO)that his Special Warfighters dont belong to him, you'd get a different answer or at least an explanation as to how the whole process works, its not so cut and dry. I know for a fact that if you told the Commandant that those marines werent his youd get a different answer. If your in the Navy or Corps then you know that being temp attached or FAP or TAD to another unit does not mean your chain of command is gone.
