I've played for 18 hours and have only completed 18%.

Really? Have you done any missions so far? This doesn't seem right. I had 7% done after completing one mission and an assassination mission, which are really pointless by the way. For a mere 6 or so hours of screwing around and doing some missions I was at 35-ish %.

This game definitively is short. Near-end upgrades completely kills the challenge in the game, I suppose it's their way of letting you know you've finished the game.

My character haven't finished the "story" missions (but close) and it can't die from anything except vehicle and melee damage.

If they balanced out the upgrades and made it a longer game I'm sure it would have been a much better game. The vehicle balance also comes to mind, the steering of SUV's and large vehicles is so unnatural and hard to steer.

This game seems a bit odd. I had a similar feeling I have with this game when I played Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood. Basically felt like I should grind out a bit of money and buy up property early on so that I could establish a steady enough cashflow to sustain me down the line. Only really done missions up to where you take over that first crib, but played about 5 hours, and am at 15% completion. Mostly just done the gang activities and buying up property. Definitely a fun game.

First Impressions so far:

-One of the best intro's to a sandbox game... GTA 4's shitty start with the ghetto "Albany car" has nothing on the bank robbery and skydiving combat SR3!

-Character creation is a blast! Spent about an hour laughing out loud as I tried different goofy setups on my character.

-Tank Mayhem owns... I got a tank bitch...move out of the way or die!

-Driving is pimp, powersliding is fun!

-Seeing two mascots a bear and a gorilla drive by on a golf cart sort of vehicle just warranted a chase and a beat down from me and Pierce..

-Lastly the metal radio station is killer

Can't wait to go home and play more... got Saints Row on the mind!

There are definitely some hilarious mingames. The tank game is among my favorite, but the Insurance Fraud (throw yourself into a busy intersection) is very funny. I just unlocked one that lets you rack up carnage with infinite grenades and it too is a great diversion.

Without giving away any spoilers, there's a visit to a BDSM club that really had me laughing, culminating in a classic and hilarious "chase" scene.

Most of the complaints I've seen about the game are centered around things that it does not have when compared to the previous version, without any explanation about why those things were absolutely necessary to begin with.

Over there
I am somewhat disappointed with the story compared to Saints Row 2, combined with a few things in the story that were just presented badly. That didn't have a huge impact on my enjoyment of it though, and it's still a very good game.

Finished the main story, and all side activities except for a couple vehicle thefts.

WOW! The game just came out a few days ago! How many hours did you put into it?

I also finished the game the day before yesterday. It's a short game, and if you know where you're going it's even shorter.

Well okay, I am a liar, I almost finished the game, I just slowly stepped away from the game after the zombies. It just got plain redundant and pointless to keep going. According to what I've heard I'm pretty close to the end though.

I finished the main plot today. I've got 11 hours in. I did do some sidemissions in the middle to take a break, but I still feel like the game was incredibly short. By the way, after finishing the main plot and a few sidemissions I have 68% completion, so it seems there is a good amount of things to get done after the game is over.

The zombie outbreak mission in the main plot was awesome. The whole Burt Reynolds thing too.

I've played for 18 hours and have only completed 18%. Have you been doing things like assassinations, auto thefts, and taking out random gang activity or have you stuck mostly to the main storyline?

Up to that point, no.

Is that unusual for the series? For the main storyline to be 8-10 hours? I mean, Oblivion can be completed (without any goofy tricks) in as many or less.

I haven't played SR2 due to it receiving a constant bashing concerning performance, so I don't have a frame of reference. I think you are saying SR3 is too short?

It took me 40 hours worth of playtime to finish the main plot in Saints Row 2 and I still had a lot to get done. I did do a lot of side missions in between plot missions though. I guess Saints Row 3's side missions just didn't pull me as much, which made the game feel really short.

Also, fuck Oblivion. It had a very boring main plot and I was somewhat glad that it was so short. Oblivion's strongest points were it's side plots (Dark Brotherhood?) and mods.
