OK, Ive managed to drag myslef away from college work to write this, just a short little bit of writing of the history of PuF from my views

    -=>A BRIEF HISTORY OF PuF<=-

OK, I brought UT as soon as it came out in the UK. Shortly afterwards i visited Planet Unreal. The reason i went to PU was because i had heard all about Planet Quake, and wanted to try see what PU was like. I saw the forums and regisered under LordKhaine and first posted on the 6th of December. At that time the UT forums had just gone UBB. The people who stuck in my mind as *the* people were LiquiD_SiN, Lizard, BadAss and Hal, (probably more that ive missed).

Anyways, i started posting a few replays, nothing much. Then BadAss posted the infamous "See me online see you online, be a PuF'er" thread. The idea being, that members of the PU forums could met up and play UT togethor online. I was one of the first to take up the PuF tag. Shortly afterwards, the IRC channel was started, and people started putting the PuF tag and meeting up for games. The first PuF'er i ever met online was BadAss on a game of Lava giant. Where i was astounded by the amount of speech binds he used. In fact, you could even say he was partly responsible for the 36 speech binds I now sport /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Within a few weeks of PuF being fully up and running, the first Euro meetings started, every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30pmGMT, Euro PuF's played on UK and Europian servers, further enforcing PuF.

Within a short space of time, several PuF skins were made and the PuF web site was lauched by LiquiD_SiN. PuF was ever growing and the number of posts was ever increasing on the PU UT forum. Then came what could be called the begining of the end /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif. The OzUT vs PuF match. The tryouts happened and the meetings occured, and the players for the home and away games chosen. Then came the match. The first 3 games were to be held in the US, the last 3 in Oz. I took part in the home games, which were well played by both sides, with us eventually winning all 3 matches. These matches were fun, and every one enjoyed themselves. So far, so good.

Then came the away game, both teams warmed up, and the match began in November, with the Oz in Blue, and the PuF in Red. Within minutes the OzUT were storming ahead, and halfway through the game, most of the PuF away team left complaining about bad pings. The match fell apart despite a few PuF modemers trying to keep things going. In the ensuring descussion in #planetunreal, several members of PuF left. And PuF effectivly stalled. No more forum matchs were to take place again for a long time /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif, and the loss of several PuF.

Things continued in PuF afterwards for a while, till a new influx of new PuF's joined replacing those who had left. The new person who joined PuF who started the biggest upset must have been Xylene. When she first started posting on PuF she spammed like no other had ever managed. PuF seems to be split between those who would throw them selves in front of bullets to protect her, and those who were astounded by the effect she had on people. Shortly afterwards things went back to normal, as did Xy's post count, and PuF returned to the base level of insanity it normally is.

TC (Team Capture) was formed, consisting of a group of PuF'ers led by Zaccix, who set about making the web site Capture. A web site devoted to CTF, including tactics and Reviews.

After this, the speed on the PuF forums slowed, and PuF started to slowly die out, leaving only an elite selection of die hards left /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif However, just recently a new wave of people have joined, along with the formation of Carpe Imperium (a clan formed form PuF'ers), and the launch of Capture. Have resulted in PuF looking as strong as ever /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

If ive missed anything out, dont shout at me, post a reply and add it in! And if this ever appears to serious, belive me its not! /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif. As 9/10 scientific tests have proved, PuF is only an addition to life, not a whole other alternative to life, as is the Ultima-Online community (/me dons flame proof suit and gets ready for incoming wall of flame /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif) yes ive missed several points out, such as taskmasters epic journey to achieve god-like status. And Roosters recent voyage into Rooster-like status. As well as The Wraith. And of course LiquiD_SiN and Lizard of Oz's disappearance from PuF. Feel free to add your views and anything ive missed out of this truly epic journey of PuF.

PS. This has gotta be the longest thread ive ever posted /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

What i meant about Xylene was the way she *used* to spam. About 80% of her posts were in the first 2 weeks i reckon.

If you go to the off-topic section, you'll notice that Liquid_SiN and Lizard have posted. So who are we missing? I haven't seen XxBonesxX in awhile. Same with Taskmaster (although he has already said he's pretty much left).

I remember the PuFvsOzUT game. That was alot of fun. Too bad the Real World caught up with me, and I am not able to play as much as I would like too. Great post LK. I would join your CI ranks... but again, I find it difficult to fight UT into my schedual *sigh*.

It's hard to explain just how different these forums are now that UT is here. The sense of community that things like the built in chat and server browser have brought are immeasurable. It is once again (I guess really.. more-so than ever) a thriving community.

The metamorphosis that takes place constantly here is a testament to what a solid bunch we have that post here.

    To quote Stallion :

" , The PlanetUnreal Forums are the most popular Unreal/UT fan forums on the net. We have well over 50,000 posts on everything from Nerf: Arena Blast to Troubleshooting. With nearly 6,000 members, there is never a lack of activity."

    Good stuff, LordKhaine!

Damn, I didn't think I had that much of an affect on PuF. /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif The only reason my post count dropped considerably was because the status of the forum was iffy at best, so it was a pain to keep trying to check if the forum was up, down, sideways, whatever. I'm gonna have to get back into my posting groove again. /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

Oh good...someone remembers the listbot. It's there if anyone needs it.
Anyway, I think PuF has boiled down to what it should be. Friends finding friends. I think we all got carried away with grandiose dreams of making PuF some giant organization to rival gamespy.
Well, as far as I'm concerned, I see no reason to not carry the PuF tag into other games. Why not be [PuF]CHRYSt in Q3? That way the friends I've made on this forum can find me in there as well.
I was in since close to the beginning, I was in on the PuF vs OzUT matches, and that was when we had a real sense of family. That's gone now, except for a select few, and those few have simply stayed on because they consider each other friends.
I love playing with the likes of Rooster, Proph, Khaine, and Nigma. I consider them my online friends. They make for a really fun experience, and they keep a chat room interesting.
Basically, what I'm saying is that PuF is serving it's purpose. It's bringing friends together. Granted, our numbers are rather small these days, and we now have many separate parts, Ci, Capture, etc, but it's still keeping people together, and bringing more in.

Barcode was triple banned just before PuF solidified.
And since the match, we've lost Lizard of Oz, L_S (more or less) Taskmaster, Badass, and a couple others.

Liquid_Sin dropped his cable connection (now that took balls)... and is now in the hunt for DSL. He'll be around more at a later time I'm sure.

Lizard actually showed up in the #PU channel this weekend.

Voyd may not have PuF in his name, but he's around and still willing to slaug.. ermm.. I mean play any of us.

    I think we're doing fine. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Khaine, bravo on an excellent thread!

PuF is such an amazingly intresting and helpful part of being and UT'er. I first got on just to ask troubleshooting questions. The quick and insightful help that I got amazed me. Being an Ultimate online newbie, Rooster and the like really helped me out in a big way. From then on, I've just been hooked.

I watch from the shadows mostly. Watched Q3 advocates go down in flames. Watched heated and sometimes intelligent conversations on mods, maps, and other things. Watch Xylene rise to our attention. And tried to help out others were ever I could.

I found myself telling everyone to "USE SEARCH FORUMS" all the time. (Rooster's fav. line.) And I found myself wanting to add neat little quips at the end of my posts. and was ticked when I found I wasn't that whitty. (go Jenny)

I haven't played with PuF'ers too much. ...Not really online that much. But when I have I have found most of them very helpful, polite, and generally good people. Thanks to you all.

    In short, *ALL HAIL PuF.*

Haven't see Space Cruz in a while so I'll pay him some respects here......
