Is this for real? Are US using China as a role model for freedom of speech? Does the US Gov really think that the rest of the world give a damn about what the movie industry and their friends over there thinks?

Sounds more like the storyline to some dystopic sci-fi movie about a future commie US they are planning.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Tex.), one of the primary backers of the measure:
When one-quarter of Internet traffic is infringing, something is already in need of repair,” he said.

So it's coming up on a majority of people deciding they want something a certain way? Yeah, you'd better shut that down before democracy does the same to you.

The whole thing speaks to a new business model that doesn't yet exist. The guy who finds it first will rule the entertainment world.

For one, I'm betting he's pulling that "one-quarter" figure out of his ass
For two, maybe it's a sign that the movie/music industries need to pull their heads out of their asses and catch up to the times

They never check, they never ask, they never think. Tell them the state is menaced by quadrillions of battle droids, and they will not count. Tell them you can save them, and they will never ask—from what, from whom? Just say tyranny, oppression, vague bogeymen that require no analysis. Never specify.

Any and all streaming video sites will cease to exist, this site will cease to exist because not only are pictures posted but also because we dared talk about said game. This is becoming absolutely rediculous. These bitches need to realize that when I watch a lets play of said game, or see a clip from a movie, then it is free advertising.

Example: I was watching youtube user Hamster alliance play Eversion and if it wasn't for his playthrough, I wouldn't have bought the thing.

The internet is going to turn into cable television 2.0.

Expensive and worthless, rolled into 1.

It'll be a case of "Oh that used to be nice and felt worth the money I spent on it, until the advertisers and corporations and politicians turned it into, well television all over again".

SOPA? Sounds like something you're not supposed to pick up off the floor when you're taking a shower.

They won't cease to exist, just users in the USA won't be able to access them from behind the great firewall!

Digital Economy Act. Some websites are already blocked - eg:

People are getting around it using proxies, shit continues, despite the DEA supposedly being dropped...

Sopa means "garbage" or "loser" in Swedish, it fits.

Edit: Europe isn't interested in this: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...tering-as-violation-of-fundamental-rights.ars

In its ruling, The Court of Justice upheld the right of copyright holders to file injunctions against intermediaries over illegal file sharing. But it struck down the provisions of the Belgian court ruling that required filtering, finding that the filtering provisions violated European Union e-commerce laws, and infringed on the rights of Scarlet and its customers. The broad monitoring required to filter file-sharing would "infringe the fundamental rights of [Scarlet's] customers, namely their right to protection of their personal data and their right to receive or impart information, which are rights safeguarded by the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU," the court panel wrote.
