Nick the first isn't right there. Circumventing the people has been done several times in the last 100 years. Its not about acceptance, its about time, the public education system and going routes that can't possibly be overturned. With time and teaching your view at the schools you will gain acceptance. Its never going to be perfect because brainwashing is never perfect, but it will work well enough.

I don't care about this particular discussion, I didn't spend more than a minute reading. What I mean is that the Economist - both articles and comments - is very influencial and worthwhile to follow

Those two "random" experts are GOP sweetheart Ted Olson and David Boies (president of his college's Young Republicans).
Both are renowned constitutional lawyers. Working together, and armed with the 14th Amendment, they successfully challenged "Prop 8".
So your misinterpretation of the 14th Amendment means nothing to me. I've read it many times, and agree with the experts; it is absolutely applicable.
Republicans mean something different to me than democrats? ok?

Its as applicable as the commerce clause giving the fed the right to regulate business. Meaning, its not applicable.

Well I don't really see why it becomes an issue. Most of the issues you've described such as medical power of attorney could be solved by only giving that right to the first spouse to marry that individual.
Still this is all really besides the point. The gay marriage issue is one about social change, hence why domestic partnerships don't solve the dispute. Polygamy is completely different. Those practicing polygamy in the US don't care about social change or legal rights. They wouldn't care if the state recognizes it or not. They just don't want to go to jail for practicing it.
