OK, guys, help me out here

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Can this be trusted? How can they sell it so low?

o_O, I had an idea. Called my Mom and asked if her and Dad got a copy of XP with their computer. They barely use their computer, so I could use their copy no problem. They will send it to me sometime this week. It's Home edition, but the "free" part makes that forgivable. Only problem is that it came with a Gateway system, and I have no idea if it will work on a new install. Guess we'll see.

Wow. The RAM just got here. I didn't pay for overnight delivery, but that's what it feels like.

Now the question is, since I have all my hardware, should I install it and then do the OS later when I get it, or just wait and do everything together? I've never switched out a motherboard and CPU before, so I don't know what that affects. Can I just swap out everything, and keep the hard drive as is, or will it not work that way? I have today and tomorrow off from work, so I'll be able to work on it.

Negative!! When you install/upgrade to a new Mobo you need to reinstall from scratch. Motherboards haven't different chipsets that require different drivers. Trust me its alot easier starting fresh. Here's your basic steps.

1) Remove all your Old Crap.. Make room to install new Crap.. (Install New Power supply)
2) Read Your Mobo Guide to make sure you install your Ram and CPU Properly, do this before mounting the Mobo its alot easier. Mount Mobo, make sure all your front panel connections (Power, Reset, Speaker, etc.) are connected correctly. You also might have to swap out the I/O Shield in the back of your case.
3) Install Graphic Card
4) Install/Connect Hardrives, CD/RW. Floppie, Etc.
5) Make sure everything is connected and be Tidy with the wiring.. Try not to mess up Airflow to much.
6) Have OS Handy and Power Up Puter, Go staright to BIOS, check all settings, follow guide.
7) Install OS..
8) Here's where you have to pay attention. Your Puter will now start with New OS, you now need to install Mobo Drivers, On Mobo CD.., Restart Puter etc.
9) Install Grpahics Driver
10) Tweak System a little.. Test Graphics if you wish.
11) Install Sound or is intergrated on Mobo install drivers for it from Mobo CD.

You get the idea.. One thing at a time and just take your time.. Set up each item after you install it test to make sure.. Good Luck Have Fun!!

Unless they have changed how they do things, Gateway computers come with an actual Windows disc, unlike HPs or Compaqs--which have a restore drive. So, if your parents are sending you a disc, then you shouldn't have any problem. Just, whatever you do, don't register it--since your 'rents already have.

SS, I was wondering if you were going to show us a link to an upgrade version, but it looks legit to me. The thing is, now that there are versions of XP with SP-2, the ones with SP-1 must have been liquidated. That's why they can sell it for so cheap. If you were concerned about actually having your own copy, then you might as well go for it, since you can DL SP-2 for free anyway. Including it with a copy of Windows is just a convenience....

[EDIT] After taking another look at that website, you wouldn't be getting the product shipped. Rather, it is a download of the product. So more than likely, they purchased a whole bunch of licenses for really cheap.

The copy of Windows they have could have only been registered by Gateway. Their computer has never been connected to a phone line, let alone the internet in any way. (Saves on not needing a firewall, pop-up blocker, spyware checker, internet browsers, email,... makes you wonder why they have a pc, eh?)

Yeah if the xp is that cheap you could download the SP2 and burn a slipstream cd of xp then you would have sp2 already included.
