Sorry, SS, I should have extolled the virtues of the A8V Deluxe board, as it kicks arse. However, I also know that you are a big Pentium fan, so I wasn't sure I could sway you in the AMD direction. However, please note that Taz, BC, DP, BT, and myself have all gone with AMD socket 939 mobos in our upgrades, so you would have a lot of support from us in that regard and if you ever had any trouble.

Nah, I have to be different. March to the beat of a different drummer and all that. This upgrade should be fine. I just need to get a new power supply to run all the new stuff. Give me a couple of weeks, I guess.

that system that i gave you links to is NOT a bad system at all. you'll do really well with that upgrade, it just doesn't leave you a lot of possibilities to upgrade later on with that motherboard, which i think was taz's point.

No, you're fine, Mav. Like I told TAZ on the phone, the next time I want to upgrade the processor or something, it'll be two or three years more, and most likely no motherboard out now will be able to support any new processor out then. So no difference from my point of view.

The DVD R/W, processor, motherboard and power supply came in today. That's all of the stuff I ordered from newegg. The RAM is on BACKORDER. :(

Needless to say, until the RAM comes, I'm in a holding pattern for the upgrade. I'm still considering whether or not to give Bill Gates any more of my money, since I think I'm going to fdisk my hard drive and re-partition it. I'm going to have to install a OS anyway, probably should start with something that still has some support (many hardware manufacturers no longer support WinME for their stuff).

Damn, that means it could take weeks. The RAM had such a good deal that everyone ordered it. You might as well give Bill your money and upgrade to XP Home..

That may very well be . . . f you don't include that millions of backdoors and hacks available through IE. Now, (it's taking way too)Longhorn, may be a whole new can of suck ass ala 64-bit style. :p

Steel can't use a 64 bit application since his new gear doesn't support it anyway. XP Pro is sweet but you really don't need the Pro version.

I don't use IE, I use Firefox.

I have both Home and Pro versions of XP, and I've found that Pro is noticably more stable than Home... but that's only my opinion.

I only use FF as well. Of course, FF has had its own security issues of late, IE outweighs them by a few million.

That's what I hear. Come to think of it, I notice the difference between my old computer (XP Home) and my new one (XP Pro). I know it's not saying much, but as far as headaches are concerned, XP Pro gives less of 'em. :D
