somewhere; sometime?
ok this weekend there was a car show at the minor league ballpark just across the river from downtown St. Louis. they were serving 1-dollar-a-cup beer and playing classic rock all day long, so here's the nicer shots I managed to grab as we stumbled about.

click to see them (almost) full size. if anyone wants the original resolution, just ask.

Thanks for the comments all of you!
In what region did you take the photos ? With fog like that, it must be near a forest or in farmland.
Well, perhaps you may not suspect this from the looks of these pictures, but it's literally on the border of the city of Antwerp. Actually, it IS still part of Antwerp since this is a region squished between the place I live (which is an Antwerpian district) and the city itself. The story behind this place is that it used to be military training ground for a really long time, but it ceased to be that way since the camp was replaced by a police department. It was turned into a natural landscape after that. This place gets pretty foggy from time to time, indeed.

M.A.D.X.W: Yes, that's a good idea, but I believe taking pictures there at night will be really difficult. You probably can't see sh*t over there as there aren't any lights. When you stand at the entrance of this domain at night, the light of the street lanterns lits up the first few meters of the road which paves the path into this territory. After that everything is shrouded in perfect blackness.

But now that you mention it, I should take your advice and try it, even if it was just because I've never actually been there when it was really dark.

I don't have the very best equipment, but here's a photo of the sunset from a few hours ago taken right in front of my house (Figuratively, I was on the hill in the park)
It's quite a large picture (2,38MB) and high res so you will see the noise... It's straight from the camera as I have never edited pictures like this before so I don't know how to.

If anyone has any tips to make my pictures look even better (by using settings on the camera) please share :)

When I first looked at it, I thought it was a snowy landscape you shot during winter. The result looks pretty cool!

I just finished uploading these to Deviant Art and a bit lazy to rehost them for thumbnailing here but if your interested here's a link of my recent work.

This will show them in order.

@Phopojijo - That infra-red work is sweet, how'd you do it? Any specific gear required?

Take your camera, and look in the LCD viewfinder (obviously with it on)... point an infrared remote control at it and press like -- volume up or something...

infrared.jpg

If you can see a light shine in your camera that your eye CANNOT see... than your camera does NOT have an infrared blocking filter... that is good. ((All CCDs can see infrared, most manufacturers block it though... BUT not every model is blocked.))

Now if you camera can see infrared, it's a simple matter of getting a lens to block just about everything BUT infrared.

I use the Hoya R72 58mm Infrared filter and a Canon Powershot A620 with a 58mm filter mounting bracket.

Exposures are long though... that one I believe I took with a 15 second exposure @ ISO 100 + f4.2 aperture (or something).

I shot RAW ((yes I hacked my Powershot to shoot RAW)) so a lot of exposure control was done (mostly to get the dark reflections on the pool surface)

Took a little bit of Infrared photography today... backyard stuff just for skill building.

Do you have the ability to manually set your white-balance (i.e. point the camera at something and set white-balance off of it)?

If so, try this...
  • Manually set the white-balance on green grass. [Alternately: blue Sky]
  • Take your shot.
  • Open image in Photoshop.
  • [Optional step] Image-> Adjustments--> Auto-levels and/or Auto-Color
  • Image-->Adjustment-->Channel Mixer-->
    • [Output Channel: Red] Red slider to -100, Blue slider to +100
    • [Output Channel: Blue] Red slider to +100, Blue slider to -100
  • Tweak image using your usual methods

And you'll end up with something like this (mine)...

or this (not mine)...

I shoot RAW... so I can set the white balance to whatever I want whenever I want...

Yeah there's many ways to play with infrared images... from the simple cooling/etc filters, channel mixing, masking & blending with full colour images... etc.
