Yes it is Norwich Castle. :) I couldn't tell you if the Egyptian mummy is still there as I haven't been there myself in a good 14 years, but as far as I'm aware it is! :)

I know what you're saying. It's kind of catch 22 because if I sorted out the exposure for the floodlights, the rest of the castle would become underexposed. It does have some stunning brickwork, and I have done some up-close shots (during the day), and normally I'd have tried other ways, but as it's for a task of making it suitable postcard (which means a crop is out) for Norwich. Postcard research tells me that the subject is almost always central, and pretty much fills the frame - Which is slightly odd as it breaks the rule of thirds! I do appreciate the feedback though, and if it wasn't for a postcard I'd agree you're absolutely right about trying a wider shot/crop.
I see what you mean about subjects being centred. A lot of old buildings (the houses of parliament for example) have towers or higher / lower bits, so even if the whole thing is centred the tower throws the eye off-centre. The castle is more or less a simple box shape, maybe that's the problem.

Are you allowed to do a split frame postcard or does it have to be a single photo?

These came out great! I love it. :)

Nice. I like the minimalisticness of the shot, but I think it could of been a little more interesting if you shot it landscaped (no idea of the actual photography term for that) and had them off center to the right maybe. Great work though. :)

Hey thanks buddy, the landscape wasnt as interesting as the subject but I do agree that the space could have been handled a little better :) Just another thing to learn :D

Sorry about the bandwidth :)

Just got back from 9 days in Umbria and Tuscany, Italy. Beautiful landscape, and some locations I've wanted to shoot since I took up photography and first came across pictures of them by the likes of Charlie Waite and Joe Cornish.

The food and wine were pretty good as well :D

All shots, Nikon D3 with various Nikkor lenses ranging from 17mm to 400mm in focal length

Dawn mist in a valley in Tuscany. The perspective is compressed using a telephoto lens.....I got incredibly muddy shooting this.

A few minutes after the sun has set at high altitude, the clouds are painted pink in the afterglow. The blur of the clouds comes from a shutter time of around a minute.

A foggy morning in Tuscany made landscapes impossible, so I played around with shooting spider's webs covered in morning dew drops.

Anywhere But Here
Took a bunch of shots today at the "Petting Zoo." That is what we call our threats training facility. It has quite a listing of old Soviet threat systems.

The small version of this is 16 bit and weighs only 2MB. The 2400x1600 16 bit image is 19MB. Only click on the large version if you must, but please do if you want to give me some feedback, as I will be most appreciative.

Israphel, those pics are superb, they are like poster material

Quick question: If I want to take a long exposure shot of a waterfall to get the cotton like effect, how do I avoid over exposing?

Any of these will do:

Lower ISO settings
Higher Fstop
Use of ND filter

I cant go below 200 on my D40 and I honestly dont know what the other two mean :) Increasing the aperture will help right?
