Went to try my hand at photojournalism and got more than I bargained for. At a peaceful licensed protest the police started beating the shit out of everyone unprovoked even. My first time out documenting this kind of stuff. Thank God I brought my 28mm Rokkor Lens with me. I figured the best shots were going to come from getting up close. My ribs are a bit sore from people running into them as I held up my camera so it didn't get destroyed. Well worth it.:)

Nice Dude! You could have sold it to an American news papers and made bank. Reuters or AP is your best bet. Most bang for your buck because AP will sell it to every newspaper in the nation.

Next time!

Naw, I would of need to of shot it digitally. I need to get a 28mm lens for my Canon to do that. You have very little time to get shots out. After an event like that it's a fucking race.

EDIT:

Doing a quick search I can only see how to buy photos from AP, not sell to. How do you go about this. I am a total noob in this department.

Cliffs in the sea like those are beautiful. That's probably one of the biggest downsides about Denmark, we don't have any cliffs :(

That one cop in the middle looks like he wants to break your camera!

Yeah, but you have a lot of other amazing stuff to shoot. This kind of stuff is what you get when living on a very active volcanic island. Anyway, here is where I shot it. http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.299486,139.47428&z=18&t=h&hl=en

Yeah, my style of shooting that day was very much like a boxer. Shoot and dodge/run. Crazy shit.

In other news; a friend is having a documentary being made about him and his style of shooting. Here's a teaser they just put out today.

Øresund is like 300 kilometers from here, although I could go take pictures of the bridge in Storebælt I guess. Bridges seem a little boring though.

The documentary about my friend is out. I would like to state that I disagree with him on a lot of things about photography, but there are many times I agree with him too. Anyway, check it out.

I watched the documentary and he really could have cut out the intro. It really had nothing to do with the rest of the film. I was also was turned off by his snobbery (mostly from the trailer) towards digital photography. I believe the format is unimportant, only the results. Choose what ever format works best for you and for the job you are working on. I'm at a place in my photography work where brand of camera, type of camera and format mean very little to me. The knowledge of knowing what camera and lenses will give you the right look for the job is always important but the entire concept of brand loyalty only places limits on yourself.

Your friend certainly has his own style and I am happy for him. In the video he took a photo of this woman through the window hugging a manikin hip with some skimpy panties. He caught her by surprise at a very nice moment, but to me the more important moment was after she realized she was photographed. The expression and body gestures were excellent. To me that was a much more important moment. I couldn't tell if he caught that but if so.. bravo!

His criticisms about telephoto lens users seemed aimed towards other street photographers. If not.. he is very wrong. To me, I don't use a telephoto lens primarily to get closer to my subjects. Use your feet and get closer to your subject. I use a telephoto lens to flatten out features and to selectively blur the background. Again the primary purpose of a specific lens changes as you enter different types of photography.

It looks like he has found his niche, style and a customer base. It seams to be working for him. As an artist I can respect it and I understand that very little matters beyond that point.

Here are a few photographs I took at two recent weddings. Based on the orders I have been getting from this season it looks like couples will always purchase a huge canvas of the two of them with a beautiful background. Sometimes the location doesn't offer a great background so we try our best to make it work. Family members will always purchase group formal shots of themselves and other family members. There is very little creativity involved in group photos which is a shame. In the future I may revisit the idea of creating epic shots of grandparents.

These first 3 shots were from a very small wedding. It was a very hot day (for Oregon) and there wasn't much to look at so you have to take what you have and find a way to make something fantastic with it.

1. Yes I am aware that the bride may look naked, but I like it! - All natural light.

2. I had to enhance the sky quite a bit to get any blue out of it. Due to brush and field burning in the area we were left with a very hazy sky. The couple was very into my dip shots so I made it happen for them. - Flash through an overhead softbox.

3. For those who thing something is wrong in that photo, she is holding on to a nail on the tree. It could easily have been a twig. - Natural light.

4. This is 9 frame HDR blended in with one normal photograph. Yes it has been highly processed. I don't usually like HDR because it is completely devoid of realistic shadows.. so part of my process is to put all of those shadows back into the image so the photograph looks somewhat real. I do however like HDR because it pulls the details out of the highlights. The final image is more cinematic than anything else. - Natural light.

5. This was originally photographed to be an HDR but as it turns out the clouds where too thick and there wasn't much detail in the sky to be had. Instead I just processed one of the frames. They still look like bad asses. - Natural light.

6. Hooray for well designed bridal rooms! They had incandescent lights on each side of the mirrors. Enough to give you the strip light look. It only took a few seconds to get this shot and it was her first pose of the day after putting on her dress. - Shot with available light.
