New Windows Viruses

id like to thank you for making that assumption too...that made ya look bad ;)

I dont get ripped software online Because of that, I just buy it...and Norton can become corrupted by a viral, easily, thats what alot of them do, I had one nasty one and what it did was it corrupted norton, they do it a number of ways, eh such as...Making it seem that norton is functioning properly, when it really isnt, so those computer illiterate people wont know the difference, but that doesnt work on the computer savvy, and then others just shut down norton completely, as in, it wont scan, if it does it freezes with the first virus it comes upon, now an up to date norton...doesnt have that issue...but this was just a few months ago, and 2002 is Way out of date, and 2003 was aging, hence the easy corruption, ive got 2004 and I have no issues now...Virals are crafty bastards...and even now some of those vicious ad-wares from KaZaA have slipped under my radar, I need to get a firewall...a Decent one...

no you dont understand man, Everything was corrupted, i was Astonished, I MIGHT have been able to get a backup copy of System32 if I had 2000, but XP, no dice, system recovery was dead, it had completely shut Down Norton AV, after a vicious Battle I was able to install Norton AV 2003, and it Corrupted it right off the bat, I had some of the Most Vicious virals on this computer, why? because One, just One, corrupted Norton, and opened the gate...now with 2000, I wouldve been able to at least save some information, burn a disc, but with XP, I had nothing, no sound, no Explorer, I went into safe mode and the virals Locked it in said mode, but never started explorer, so I had a black screen with "Safe Mode" in each corner that wouldnt work, even after rebooting, the Only thing that still worked was the internet connection, they had effectively made this computer a simple Bastion to the inner workings of whatever purpose the virals served, with full Cable internet access, sick huh?

Seriously, what makes u believe you could've done more in 2k than in XP?

And btw, if you're already infected, it's often too late...

theres plenty of little quick fixes I Could've done with 2000, that wouldve at most let me save some of my personal info...lemme tell ya...getting all those maps and mods back for UT2003 bites the big one...whew...with XP I just didnt have as many options, because it purposely keeps them limited, its built to be more simplistic, and you have to cut off all of that crap, and the last time I did that, it screwed itself, so I was stuck simply getting rid of the blue interface, among other little things I didnt need, 2000 had lots of little things you could do, XP...well it got rid of them...when my uncle and I tried to fix the computer...every fix he attempted failed simply because XP didnt have the capability...

well at the time I had no option, my uncle had 2003 and I had a corrupted norton...so I had to kick back with the virals until help arrived...

I've always backed up everything... automatically.
It's just a matter of how you've got your stuff configured + backed up intelligently.

There's really NO POINT of arguing whether NT5.0 or NT5.1 is much better... you can reduce/expand each other to like the same level if you want... and don't tell me you need every single Useroption 2000 hat for a single-user client-pc.

The big OS fights starts again

Well, most people who cry that the older versions is better than the new one, do so often becuase they are to lazy to learn new stuff. ;)

I totally agree with Bazzi, as him I have stripped and tweaked my XP and it boots in no time and are as stable as a rock :)

Back on topic:

If the roles were reversed and linux was the preferred OS for business, it would get as many hacks and viruses as windows does today. Any system is hackable.

If you know what you're doing, Windows runs just as well as Linux and Linux runs just as well as Windows. The problem is the users, not the OS and that Windows tries to be idiot-proof, so people don't think they have to dig into the OS and actually do anything to maintain it. The reason linux systems tend to run better is because of the people using linux are typically more computer savvy than the typical Windows user. My desktops and servers run great, don't get hacked, and don't crash, but then, I actually know what I'm doing.

So, please Pete, don't be "The Register." Just report news objectively. The only people who care about your opinion on Windows are the one's who read it and say "HAHA he said blecch". To me, it's just offensive.

its not new stuff its the lack thereof...it cut back...its a prettier dumbed down version of 2000 in which its prettiness is a resource hog...things were removed...just small stuff...stuff this time around they didnt want people tinkering with...so it was cut off...if it were possible id say it was the most mainstreamed Windows yet...which is a great feat considering Windows is mainstream...im not saying its a terrible OS in general...im saying its the worst Windows in general...in comparison to all the others...it really is...shouldve said that from the start...eh...

you know I've heard people complain about that same feature before...I'm glad I have a scanner in my email...automatic deletion is...I guess...Easier...but...I like doing the dirty work myself I spose...

/me looks down on WinXP and proudly waves his little Win98SE flag ;)

Virus mails started spamming in this morning, but it seems it stopped already. Or maybe I'm just not that popular. ;)

Ummm, you know what is offensive to me? Getting 200 freaking virus emails simply because, in the end, people were too lazy to protect themselves by keeping up-to-date anti-virus software running on their PCs.

I am responsible for about 200 Windows boxes at work, and three here at home, and none of them are infected. My Xandros comment was meant like this: if you're too lazy to run up-to-date AV software, just run Linux, and spare the rest of us (and the entire internet) the hassle of wading through your splooge.

BTW, it goes beyond Windows, Linux and AV software. Anyone with a connection to the internet, especially broadband, should be running a firewall of some sort. Based on the thousands and thousands of spam emails I've looked at, I can tell you that a good 25% of them - easy - are sent from cable modem users' computers. These people probably don't even know they've been compromised.

Frankly, I could give a rat's ass whether someone runs Windows or Linux. My point is - run it securely, already. How many viruses have to come down the pike before these people learn to protect themselves?

I don't think in the end, it's really the OS you use that determines the amount of viruses. It has 99% to do with the user. It makes sense that windows users get more viruses then linux users not just because their OS is inferior, but also because, in general linux users are more computer literate then the average windows user. That being said I have never once had a virus, and I'm on windows.

cmon Pete ya know I didn't mean that to come across as a flame.

And, if someone is too lazy to run up to date AV, you think they'll have the presence of mind to be a linux user?

yes every broadbander should have a firewall... but that's just not the case.

By the way... we got over 500 virus emails :(
none of them infected anything :)
