All the technologies used on the samaritan demo, are available on this month´s udk version.

Sadly, the contents... you know, the street, the character... are not... Well, is there like mostly all of these content is going to come on a comercial game, maybe, so it would be too much if they release it for free... anyways, some of you...now, release some character with cool hair, fast, im waiting.

"Realistic Foliage" is not a feature. It's just a bunch of meshes with simple vertex shaders... which have been available since DirectX 8.

"Seamless Lighting Transitions" is also not a feature. This is called a light, you've been able to change their properties for as long as people have been using dynamic lights in 3d graphics.

I guess it probably means you can change baked lighting dynamically.

edit: Or rather have baked lighting transitions....

That seems more like what they are talking about unless they are using 0 baked lights in their demonstration, which wouldn't make a lot of sense (to me).

That's what I took it to mean too. If it was just about showing a dynamic light changing they would have shown us some disco ball or used one of the neon ads in their Blade Runner city scene to demonstrate it, not a scene that changes from daylight lighting to nighttime lighting.
That the torch went on looked like a nice additional touch on the side to me.

It would still be interesting to know what they meant by "realistic foliage" because I don't get that one either.

One thing that I don't see is any test map showing off landscape tech. Been trying to figure it out, even followed the UDN tutorial but still a bit stumped.

For now in my new UDK scene I am using old terrain tech.

No, the demo had DM-HeatRay and VCTF-Suspense, not DM-Deck and VCTF-Sandstorm. ...actually, is Sandstorm even included in the current UDK?..

Well it obviously doesnt come with the UT3 beta demo. It comes with Deck and I think Sandstorm using all the new shiny stuff from the updated engine making UT3 fans sad because UT3 will not get the updated engien...

That's a dynamic, directional light. It's orientation and colour changes, as does the material shader used in the sky. This isn't anything new, nor really a "feature".

But how many times do you hear people considering what engine to use immediately say "Does it do good foliage?" and "does it do dynamic time of day?" For some reason that always comes up. It must be an important selling point regardless of whether they are any particular new feature. Now if only UE3 had a true vector for gravity then they'd have the market cornered :D

UDK is such a complete package as far as production is concerned.
Anyone using it to build games should consider themselves lucky.

Remember last year when Valve updated all their Source games to the latest engine build?

That was awesome.

(Yes, I understand it was for the Mac release, but still....)

Epic would be better off having at least some of their games on rolling engine releases. They practically do that anyway, UT3 is, for the most part, built on UDK already.
