Better then the impact hammer? Only the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, or George Lucas could concieve a better melee weapon then the impact hammer. We've already determined Laser swords are out, so...
The trick would be what defensive capabilities you give the melee as far as how they work vs RW. It'd have to be nerfed (probably) compared to UC*, but you'd also want some aspect of using them (increased walking speed maybe) to make them slightly more effective on the offensive side. I also don't think anything "race specific" belongs in a stock UT game. Leave that for the console junkies.
I think a couple "balancing buf's" on the IH will make it quite suitable. Like a full charge tap for alt fire... that would be great. Gotta make the "auto-discharge" better like it was in UT, which it prolly will, along with easier rocket lock tone if they make better the model scaling.
