For Windows users it is a bit tricky getting this game to work because it was designed with Mac users in mind. Marathon is by far one of the best first person shooters ever made and Mac users got it first.

First off you are going to need AlephOne This is used to play Marathon on Windows XP.

Here is Marathon Infinity

Marathon 2

Marathon 1

To run these first get Alephaone, make a alpehaone folder for each marathon game, and unzip the files from each marathon download into the alephaone main directory.

Run the .exe named alephone.exe and that will start the game.

Marathon supports OpenGL but it doesn't seem to work, atleast it didnt for me anyways. You can run it at upto 1600x1200, which is cool. You are also going to wan to go through the prefense settings first before playing the game as it uses ancient keybaord settings. Back in the day people didnt use WASD for movement, nor did they use a mouse. :con: This also has free look with the mouse to, so that is kicking-rad.

Multiplayer support doesn't seem to work either with Windows XP, which is a shame because Marathon Infinity has over 80 multiplayer maps.

Marathon was one of my first FPS on mac (back then).
At the time it had one over on Doom because you could look up and down too.
I actually tried mapping for it, but the mapping guide was pages and pages long, and I had no internet back then either. (Also the editor was a rudementary if i recall correctly)
ahh *sigh* ranting like an old man :)
but I did enjoy this game a lot

Hah! I bet I already downloaded and forgot about it. AlephOne certainly rings a bell.

So.. you posting these in reversed order? I guess I should start with Marathon 1, folled by 2 and Infinity last.

Man... Marathon, what a game. The people at my dad's old work used to play this game all the time there, so sometimes when my dad had to work weekends, me and some buddies would go with him and LAN it up in Marathon and Warcraft 2, hehe...

Hmm, they must've broken multiplayer in a later release or something. It definitely worked in the past-- I actually played a game against some Mac users like a year back or so.

Oh, and Forge (the level editor), rocked! Man... WolfEdit got me sorta started on mapping, but Forge is really what got me hooked. You could do so much with just a bit of imagination and tricks... even psuedo-3D areas (rooms over rooms) by tricking the game engine.

EDIT: Anyone remember Marathon EVIL and Tempus Irae? Those were great TCs...

Sweet. All that's left is to get Glider Pro ported and I'll have all the mac games I ever wanted.

Marathon was THE game in my book in terms of early shooters. Wolfenstein was good and all but Marathon was a thinking man's shooter. Sometimes it would take you a hell of a long time to figure out how to make it through a level. I think the Unreal games all owe a huge debt to Marathon. The weapons, the narrative, the maps. A lot of that was clearly nicked from Marathon.

M1A1 was released a while ago. It's good to see that Bungie have followed this up with the release of the other episodes. Here's an e-mail I sent a while ago asking about the Marathon port.

Hi,

Just downloaded your port of Marathon to this aleph one thingy. I was (and
still am) a big fan of Marathon from the days when I had an LC475. I'm
currently using some Wintel hardware and have also d/led the Alephone win32
executable. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get things to work ... I've
copied these files to the Marathon M1a1 folder and when I launch the
program it gives me an error -1 and recommends that I verify M1 Maps,
Shapes, Images & Sounds. What causes this and what am I doing wrong ?

TIA,
Jim.

Jim:

I belive you're using the macintosh files from The Big House, which are incomplatible with Aleph Windows. Grab the Windows-compatible files at

http://fileball.net/marathon/item.fb?685442899

This version is not supported by the M1A1 team (even though I authorized it) because Randall changed some things I didn't like and he never changed them back. Reach "A Good Way To Die..." (one of the bonus secret levels) and you'll see what I mean (It's unplayable!!)

This doesn't mean you have to download again the mp3 tracks - you can use the tracks included in the mac version, just change the name of 3 files:

Rename "Fat Man.mp3" to "Fat_Man.mp3"
"Flowers In Heaven.mp3" to "Flowers.mp3"
"What About Bob?.mp3" to "What About Bob.mp3"

And place them in the M1 Tracks directory.

But if you want the tracks offered by Randall (which are the same as the mac tracks, plus others) the URL is:

http://fileball.net/marathon/item.fb?789111145

Oh, there's a script update for the SDL version

http://fileball.net/marathon/item.fb?591613445

Again, the SDL is not supported by the team (although Alex may response this email too) - Contact Randall or the Aleph One developers ( http://source.bungie.org ) if you continue to experience problems.

Hope this helps.

Up my ass
I've noticed a new trend from Game Developers, releasing their real old games for free. I hope more do it. They realize people still want to play these games.

I hope so too. It's better this way than to have a stupid company buy right on old games and attempt to sue anyone that downloads them.
