you can use the shockrifle method.
subclass the shockbeam and the sniperrifle.
alter the schockbeam so it's lifespan is a bit longer (enought for a texture animation), it is not bParticles and it's a little thinner (fatness).
Make a texture that fades out and let the beam use it.
Copy the "spawneffects" function from shockrifle to sniperrifle and put the call to this function in the same place in sniperrifle.
This should mean you spawn an effect that has, say a red texture that fades out to nothing (make sure it's Translucent too) and that repeats itself until it hits a wall...

hehe, I might warn you thoug...
at some points in facing worlds, when shooting into space, or very far away, the beam ran away to the origo point (0,0,0) in the map for some weird reason...

But it was half-an-hour worth of work, and I didn't have time to bugtest it... :)

i had the same thought on laser guns in general. The UT engine doesn't lend itself to beam effects, but if you kinda mix the pulse gun alt fire with the shock rifle with some tweaking you can get the effect i got, which is very cool. could produce some major lag in large open maps though. heres a pic of it in action with some bots on dm-spacenoxx.

I have always thought that the shockbeam was a bit dull...
I mean, if it's a flash then let's make it look like a real thunderbolt...
And if it's a laserbeam make it look like one... :)
I kinda like this laserrifle, cause it's a clean, clear, ruby-red, half-transparent thin laserbeam that burns away the head of the enemy with surgical prescision... :)
There's allready a laser-sniperrifle out 'on the market' but thatone's merely a minimized version of the instagib-beam...
It's fun, but it would look better with my ruby-beam... ;)
