You could also try going through your Castlevanias in Hard Mode with level 1 cap. It's like a totally different game. Usually what happens is, you're forced to use absolutely every aspect of the game system, and you'll learn stuff about enemy patterns you never noticed before. OoE's especially is brutal. More than once I've been killed by a ****ing Une. It takes a certain tenacity to enjoy it I guess, but the payoff is worth it.
Sure is...
Increasing the Level cap to 255 makes it worth it. :)

I actually was trying to do Portrait of Ruin's on Hard Mode max. Level 1, which was ****ING RIDICULOUS, but lost my copy of the game before I could get anywhere far. Seriously, most things are insta-kill on that difficulty.

I remember the crab and the shadow boss being particularly annoying in Ecclesia. It's one of those games where there's a very specific order you have to perform in order to beat some of the fights...and in some cases it seems only one way will work. Once you figure it out it's not so rough, although all the finger blistering deaths before that can get you frustrated :)

I liked the game a lot, but unlike Portraits I wasn't as satisfied with the gameplay in the end. Which surprised me because it was like Symphony. The Richter mode in Portraits is a particular favorite of mine. Very tough, very oldskool.

Yeah, this is usually the case if the designer feels that 'boss patterns' should be an integral part of the gameplay - where it's entirely about learning their behaviour and not much twitch/reflexes.

I'm fine with it if you can learn the pattern by defending, but having to die a few times to attacks you'd never foresee just belongs back in the arcade where you'd literally pay money to learn the patterns.

My sentiments exactly. I like hard. I welcome hard. And Castlevania is no stranger to spectacular boss fights. There's a particular charm to learning by trial in error in classic games, and I'm a gigantic fan of Nintendo hard (playing through the Japanese import of Super Mario 2 on my Wii atm, which is known as the Lost Levels in the US...and having a ridiculous amount of fun with it. Deaths and all). But there's a difference between presenting the player with a difficult challenge and letting them work out an approach...and presenting the player with a specific routine that has to be performed right out of the gate or else the player will die, so they literally have to die in order to figure it out. That's great if I'm pumping coins into a box. It's economy.

But if I buy the thing, save that stuff for the bonus material. Portraits did a good job with that on the bonus modes, and every Metroid game worth it's salt has a super hard way you can try to beat the game on speedruns or reduced inventory if you want to (and nobody does that like Metroid, and there's a really great 15% or 9% inventory challenge in Zero Mission).

He might be thinking of Circle of the Moon although I'm not too sure of the difficulty of that game, having not played it...

Didn't even bother finishing CoTM because its design was ugly o_O
I'm talking about HoD, no joke, some of the regular enemies were annoying. If there's an easy Castlevania aside SOTN, that's Aria of Sorrow. Just level up a bit, get some items from the monsters and that is, you'll be pretty much invincible for the rest of the game :p

At least they decreased the drop rate of the monsters in later games, at least in DoS afaik.
As bonus modes go, the best one was the Julius/Yoko/Arikado mode in DoS. It had a proper story and another final boss.

Space Ho's

As far as I remember Harmony of Dissonance was pretty easy. To pass the time I've been playing Symphony of the Night on my 360. It's pretty damn good, except I get lost after every other powerup .

Spelunky has a tight control scheme, although it's not necessarily a Metroidvania. The demo I played of Aquaria makes me yearn for less exploring of aquatic environments and more action. I'm kind of reminded of of a more non-linear Ecco the Dolphin. Downloaded Super Metroid Redesign but have yet to play it...will get on that ASAP.

The day has come, only a few more hours until Order of Ecclesia reaches my mailbox.

I also got a sweet DANGERDOOM album.

Been playing SM Redesign because of the suggestion in this thread (can't believe I hadn't heard of it before) and it's pretty cool. I like the physics and other gameplay changes but the maps so far are pretty linear. It also didn't completely give me that fresh feeling like I was expecting it to.

It just doesn't match up with SM because of the map design imo but I love the gameplay changes so far. There are some annoyances where they expect you do something not-so-obvious with the game mechanics, so you might have to look it up online*, but other than that it looks like I'll be having some fun. Love wall-jumping. :)

(Early hints: Reflect missile... Jump and do a mid air morph ball... damn hour wasted )

Agreed. The only part of Ecclesia I didn't like, I even really hated it. If that didn't come through in my post mentioning boss trial and error. :p

It gets a bit actioner as you go, but not quite to the same degree as SotN. A core aspect is shapeshifting into the needed forms, and you'll spend most of the time using the puzzly forms while just dodging the badguys.

A bust that only the PSP version got some special stuff for SOTN (Maria, new dialogues, etc).

Bleh, at the very least I'm playing on a TV that the game deserves and not a tiny portable system that all this goodness is crammed into.

SM Redesign first impressions are as follows:
THIRTY SECOND ESCAPE TIME ON A KEYBOARD? SCREW YOU SM REDESIGN. SCREW YOU.

Enemies...take a lot of hits. I miss one-shotting things at the beginning of the game, it contrasts well with facing harder stuff and going "damn I'm in the **** now." Now it's all ****...metaphorically speaking.

**** YOU KEYBOARD CONTROLS!

Wall-jumping a necessity? Bleh.

I like SM Redesign so far, but it doesn't have as good map design as the original, as SleepyHead pointed out. Also, I need a gamepad. Really.

I may end up replaying Super Metroid again just to get a grip on controlling Samus and because it's just such a wonderfully made game.

WEWT, Order of Ecclesia gotten; more days of my life gone by the wayside!

As far as first impressions go (I'm at Prison Island at the moment), I don't find this game to be that hard. Maybe it's because I watched some YouTube videos beforehand of these first levels? But even so I wasn't getting my ass handed to me, with me stopping my play after my first death in the game at the second boss.

Glyphs r fun.

Oh, just wait. The first bosses aren't too bad, but around halfway through the game...
Right around when you have a boss fight versus Albus...
The game gets a MAJOR jump in difficulty in terms of the bosses.
Most of the ones in Dracula's Castle will have you ripping your hair out.

He isn't that hard mon. When he attacks with the FM bullet(thats what it sounds like to me), just jump behind and let loose

Here is an easy solution that worked for me during crabby

If your on the left side of him, always stay on the second ledge(closest to his feet). 99% of the time he will not hit you, even with his claws. Only move when he is about to blow his bubbles and even then its easy to dodge. You will know when you have dealt enough damage when he rears his big claw really slowly. That means you need to jump up and book it to the left most corner as he is going to do a super swipe and RAWWWERERRR. Of course now just dodge his claw while he is breaking the ceiling, repeat 2 more times and your home free.
