I beat Mr. Crabby Pants, he really wasn't that hard. All of this aforementioned hardness that occurs later in the game worries me, but then again I doubt it is as hard as I Wanna Be the Guy.

Also, I'm replaying Super Metroid and am finding it to be as good of a game as it was 15 years ago. Maybe that's why I need a Metroidvania so much; my standards are too high :p

Nah, it's not nearly IWBTG-hard, just Nintendo Hard. The regular enemies and levels themselves aren't too bad; it's the bosses who'll murder you dead.

Serious answer is Wallman. He can't be killed directly, duh.

Blackmore (shadow boss) was the annoyance in OoE, even if I liked him. He reminds me of Aguni/Agni from the previous games.

Yeah Blackmore was a pain in the ass for me my first go around as well, that is till I realized he was weak against
light/holy spells

I equipped every piece of armor that could raise that stat as high as it could go, even popped on a death ring for good measure. Yeah that meant a 1 hit kill on me, but I also got really good at dodging his fists.

You don't unlock them with the castle, you unlock them through the castle. :p

what can I say, I put OoE down for over a month. Every once in a while I try again. I think I beat Death and I have to kill Dracula(and still have the two extra dungeons ahead of me although I tried finishing them several times). Dunno, I think I'm frustrated wit hthat game to continue playing.

BUMP

So, I've been playing a lot of Super Metroid recently, and there's nothing about nostalgia that makes excuses for this game. It is sheer brilliance. The pacing, the level design, the mood, and so on; everything adds to make a sublime experience. Even the glitches and secrets are done wonderfully.

I think that is why I was having trouble finding a Metroidvania. The one that spawned the genre is too damn good.

In other news, the maker of I Wanna Be the Guy is working on a title in this genre called Brave Earth that will incorporate fighting game style moves and if it keeps up with the quality of design that IWBTG had, I'd say it would shape up to be something worth getting.

Has anyone found any good Metroidvania titles recently?

Oh yeah, there's Shadow Complex....

Untitled Story

(Sorry if this is a dead thread, but there's one I'd like to add) One of my absolutely favourite games of this type is Untitled Story by Matt Thorson of Mattmakesgames.com

The style and design is just brilliant, with a massive world and lots to do. I always consider it to be better than cave story and the like. Hope... someone here likes it, anyways.

AAH NECROPOSTING NO KEEP THE ZOMBIES AWAY!

Actually I was looking back and thinking about bumping this thread anyways; I have some games I've played that deserve mention.
  • I did play a little of Untitled Story, and my verdict for that game is I like it but there are other games that interest me more at this moment in the same genre. One day I will continue playing it....
  • The first game that deserves mention is...Super Metroid. Again. Why? Because it is still so ****ing awesome that it still remains my favorite metroidvania out of all the metroidvanias. So I guess I'm kind of damning myself when I keep wanting an experience that matches that. Oh well. I'm playing through it yet again, this time to try to get 100% completion. It will happen!
  • There's Aquaria, which has super metroid/SoTN type progression but with an underwater environment.

You need to be confident in your manhood to deal with the setting - a lot of people are refusing to play it for the "gay" graphics, but it's a hella decent game. My friend bought it for me for christmas and I played it pretty much nonstop the following days. It took me about 19 hours to finish the game and another 4 to wrap up all the steam achievements.

Looks super crisp in 1680x1050, really cool with some upbeat and vibrant graphics inbetween my ut3 and battlefields.

I finally manned up and played through the entire demo...and then immediately bought the full game. Pretty much the closest thing I've wanted in terms of a metroidvania in modern day trappings. I haven't beaten it yet (for one thing I hear the ending is a downer), but damn if it hasn't been awesome all the way through so far. The only thing is that the beginning is slow and almost gives the false impression that the game is going to be a casual experience. It's not. It's awesome.
  • Played through Shadow Complex last year. It was good, if not an utter clone of Super Metroid. That's not a bad thing at all. I almost bemoan the fact that it has those blue lines; I feel the enjoyment of the game would have gone up immensely if it incorporated more non-linearity and less hints telling you where the next checkpoint was. Still, I need to 100% that mofo.
  • Order of Ecclesia remains unbeaten. For one, I'm kinda stuck on a sand-shark thing and haven't put in the effort to kick its ass. Two, it suffers from "stick monsters in a rectangle" level design, i.e. it's kinda ****ty. Fun gameplay though.
  • Metroid: Zero Mission is pretty awesome. First impressions leave me wanting to put this near the top of the list of best metroidvanias. Still, Super Metroid takes the gold for me, but hey, this one is damn sweet.
  • Why I haven't finished Cave Story I will never know. Considering how awesome its been so far I should pick up the controller and continue saving bunny-people.
  • IWBTG looms over the horizon like Mt. Everest. I don't know if I will ever beat the thing, but it sure is inviting me to brave its death-scape.
  • La Mulana needs play. Although I'm not sure how much I dig the controls, the massive scope of the game deserves some looking into.

That's kinda where I'm at with this hunt for games in what is definitely my favorite sub-genre in my favorite genre of all time. I'm up for any recommendations you all have, but thankfully my current needs for good metroidvanias are being dealt with. Mostly.
