Minn. Trooper Writes 205 Mph Ticket
Sep 22, 7:37 AM (ET)
WABASHA, Minn. (AP) - With a State Patrol airplane overhead, a motorcyclist hit the throttle and possibly set the informal record for the fastest speeding ticket in Minnesota history: 205 mph.

On Saturday afternoon, State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha, in southeastern Minnesota on the Wisconsin border, watching two motorcyclists racing along U.S. Highway 61.

When one of the riders shot forward, Loney was ready with his stopwatch. He clicked it once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on the road and again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, which Loney calculated to be 205 mph.

"I was in total disbelief," Loney told the St. Paul Pioneer Press for Tuesday's editions. "I had to double-check my watch because in 27 years I'd never seen anything move that fast."

Several law enforcement sources told the newspaper that, although no official records are kept, it was probably the fastest ticket ever written in the state.

After about three-quarters of a mile, the biker slowed to about 100 mph and let the other cycle catch up. By then Loney had radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two over soon afterward.

The State Patrol officer arrested the faster rider, 20-year-old Stillwater resident Samuel Armstrong Tilley, for reckless driving, driving without a motorcycle license - and driving 140 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65 mph.

A search of speeding tickets written by state troopers, who patrol most of the state's highways, between 1990 and February 2004 shows the next fastest ticket was for 150 mph in 1994 in Lake of the Woods County.

Tilley did not return calls from the newspaper to his home Monday. A working number for him could not immediately be found by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Only a handful of exotic sports cars can reach 200 mph, but many high-performance motorcycles can top 175 mph. With minor modifications, they can hit 200 mph. Tilley was riding a Honda 1000, Loney said.

Kathy Swanson of the state Office of Traffic Safety said unless Tilley was wearing the kind of protective gear professional motorcycle racers wear, he was courting death at 200 mph.

"I'm not entirely sure what would happen if you crashed at 200 miles per hour," Swanson said. "But it wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure."

What an idiot. That guy could have easily outran that cop. I was coming home from the club I worked at in Miami one night on the expressway and me and my friend would race cause it was 4am and no one was on the road. We would hit 120+ MPH and once I passed a cop and he pulled out turned on his lights, then just turned them off when he realised how fast we were going. He didnt even attempt to catch us. Now this sucker was going 205? And the cop caught him? Loser.

Seems you didn't read the article. He only did 205 for a small portion of the journey, which he then slowed down. THe cop that saw him wasn't even the one who pulled him over, so the guy probably thought he was in the clear.

Anyway, wow. Just, wow. 205 miles an hour...if that could be kept up, ... :D

quote: STATE PATROL PILOT

no car can outrun an airplane or helicopter, nor a radio for that matter, case closed, they should have left him ride on so he could not pollute the gene pool with his sillyness anymore :p
Also the ability for law enforcement to pursue traffic offenders for the most part, in most states is limited to FELONY crimes, speeding is not a felony so if they dont think they can catch you, they probably wont chase. As well as most police departments having stringent policies against giving high speed chase, as it not only puts the officers at serious risk, the pursued party at risk, and countless other non participants at risk, they arent allowed to because its too dangerous.
There are a lot of times the officers get thier butts chewed out even after chasing and catching someone in a high speed chase, despite the fact they did good by not killing anyone and getting the bad guy :D

Don't most State Police in the US have mounted cameras these days? Can't they write you a ticket off your rear license plate alone? Or is that not "viable" evidence for a speeding infraction.

I'd almost hafta pull him over just to high-five him. j/k. :D

Seriously, Bushwack's right. There is a big push in law enforcement for more stringent pursuit policies, due to many things, one reason being civil liability. The macho days of chase 'em no matter what and fu*k 'em if they die are long gone. There is a huge set of criteria that must be met and evaluated by both the officer and the supervisor before continuing any chase. Believe it or not, foremost in my mind is the ability of the officer, and the safety of bystanders and/or suspects.

However, NT, Bush is also right, you can't outrun a radio.......besides, even attempting a pursuit on someone doin' 205 is just plain....stupid, but then again, doing 205 on the highway is just plain....stupid. Serves no purpose and would only lead to someone dying needlessly.

Having said that, and although I firmly believe in strict pursuit criteria, in my opinion, publicizing a no-pursuit policy is just an invitation for people to run.

But we also have some new things we didn't even have ten years ago. StopSticks kick a$$. But believe it or not, they actually have a warning printed on the stopsticks themselves: "DO NOT USE ON MOTORCYCLES". Duh.

**EDIT**
UN, not in Ohio that I am aware of. Ohio is also one of I believe a handful of states that REQUIRE patrol cars that primarily enforce or are assigned to enforce traffic laws to be equipped with a visible emergency light and some type of vehicle marking that identifies the vehicle as an emergency vehicle. Although a lot of agencies have dash mounted cameras which help substantially in either later identifying violators and gathering some pretty funny evidence, and some states are using stationary cameras to issue citations for red lights and in some cases speeding violations, I personally have a problem with that. For one simple reason: Prove to me that the person driving the car is the person to whom the vehicle is registered.

The problem with videos (or even photos, or photo radar) is they can't tell who is driving the car, only how fast it is going. So what ends up happining is the owner gets a big fine but no one gets any points taken off.

Not in Australia. Here, if a stationary speed camera registers you speeding, the cars owner is sent a fine to which you can then pay. If you do pay the fine though, this registers you as the driver to which 2 points are deducted. The thing is though, and l've done this already, is that since l've just only started driving, l have limited points, but my mum on the other hand has plenty, so l "paid the fine but my mum wore the points.
In my oppinion, stationary cameras are just a money making scheme in Australia.

Our state does that silly. ;)

And you're a filthy cop? For shame! We're not friends anymore!

So are we still meeting at your place for that fourth of July cook-off at your place again next year?

The general attitude when it comes down to other people borrowing something and using it illegally is that it's still your fault. You allowed them to use it, and if there's no way to prove it was them, then it's on you for letting someone use it, especially if they're the kind of person to speed on red lights or whatever it is you're getting fined for.

However, NT, Bush is also right, you can't outrun a radio.......besides, even attempting a pursuit on someone doin' 205 is just plain....stupid, but then again, doing 205 on the highway is just plain....stupid. Serves no purpose and would only lead to someone dying needlessly.

Of course it serves a purpose. To them, it's the most fun in the world. You could say that playing any game on a computer serves no purpose, since it's only job is to entertain, but to me that's kind of stupid to say. You could however, say something like, "It was plain....stupid because someone could get seriously injured/die."

So back on topic:

I wonder how much weight you'd actually have on the ground on a motorcycle at 205mph?

I dunno, prolly not much. I've done just over 160 on a motorcycle and it felt like I was floating above the ground.

That's right, I said it, I did 160 on a motorcycle. BUT, I ALWAYS look up for planes first,

And my point Geno, is that regardless of what purpose it serves one's self, unless you've got your own private road, it's the innocent people out there driving that I worry about, not only from idiots driving like that, but the police chasing them. I personally could care less what people want to do to themselves, it's the innocent people that don't ask for that crap that bothers me. The old "your freedom stops where mine starts" thing.

And I felt I said the same thing besides when I added "would only lead to someone dying needlessly". But, point taken. :D
