Well I don't know many good european bands that aren't death metal, or at least have some death in their music, but if you're willing to be a bit lenient there's The Ocean a german band who I haven't seen mentioned.
And if you like alt. metal you should definitely check out Karnivool, they're an awesome alt/prog metal band from Australia that are awesome. Their newest album Sound Awake is IMO the best album of 2009, and have I mentioned they're awesome?
Also Porcupine Tree they're English IIRC.

Off the top of my head Skindred is pretty good and not afraid to be occasionally silly, also Dub War and Biffy Clyro are doing well, gone off them myself though.
Thomy Yorke?

As for females, never been keen on nightwish or evanessence, too pretentious.
I quite like Animal Alpha though and I'd reccomend some Skunk Anansie, you've also probably heard of Garbage, bit older and easier on the ears I guess.

I'll try to think of some more... (not already mentioned)

Yay! 5 year old thread
Karnivool
Yep.

Tryad is great, indie, and.. free.
Yes, Tryad is brilliant. I love Listen, the album.

I Are Droid - awesome Sweedish band.
Jane From Occupied Europe - British shoegaze band. But from the 80s/90s.
Pluxus - they're like weird electronic stuff. From Sweeden.
Silence Is Sexy - Cool indie pop/rock band from Netherlands.
Whynotme - Punk rock band from Norway.
Depressive Art - Really good, sort of like 60's rock or something.
Poets Of The Fall :)
Soulwax - electronic rock stuff, coolio.

America! Say Hi, The Magnetic Fields, Beat Happening :)

Seigmen - Total (album title)
Seigmen - Metropolis (album title, link to the song Metropolis)
Seigmen - Metropolis: The Grandmaster Recordings (album title, English version of Metropolis)

(The members of Seigmen later formed Zeromancer.)

What are you smoking? I've known who Opeth is for like 10 years. They have been well known in North America for a long time.

Opeth is the most well known of the bands i mentioned, but go out on the street and ask random people if they know "Opeth" and see how many hits you get.. hence it falls under the catagory "or know very little about".

Uh you could say the same for 99% of the bands listed in this thread. Probably even more true with most of the other bands actually.

The Netherlands
what about Tokio Hotel, and Cinema Bizarre (both German bands)
Holy ****, he necrobumped a 5-year-old thread to promote Tokio Hotel.
/edit: eek, only just saw his name. D:

Anyway, if it so happens that you're still looking for music after 5 years :)rolleyes:) and seeing you like Evanescence, you should check out Within Temptation. You might like it.
/edit2: and I second The Gathering. That band was frickin' amazing. Saw them live, and that woman sung so so so sharp. Possibly even better than on CD. They really managed to rock the hell out of the songs, too, which you might not expect if you listen to the music. The Gathering has a different lead singer now though, I don't really know what happened to them. The amazing previous lead has her own project now called Agua de Annique. It's even softer than The Gathering though, so if you're looking for ballsy music, you might not like it.

That's just one of the 4 bands i mentioned, the other 3, which you are conveniantly skipping over in this strange fit of nerd rage (why is this so important to you?), i doub't more than a handfull of people on this forum know (all the Danes, maybe one or two non Danes).

The point is, Opeth is a band i doubt Brizz has heard of, hence i put it on the list (mind, this was before i realized this thread got necrobumped), as it is a great band that can be enjoyed even by people who are not all that into metal (maybe not all their songs, but most of them), and nobody else had bothered to mention them.

Nobody's in a nerd rage in this thread but you man. All I was saying was Opeth felt strangely out of place with the other bands on your list. Thus the lack of need to bring them up. Duh

Yeah, I know it's an old thread...

I know you mentioned no Death Metal, but I have to add another vote for Opeth. I have a very low tolerance of Death Metal, but Opeth really are something special. They verge on prog a lot of the time, lots of acoustic stuff. Check out the album "Still Life" for a start.

I have heard Lacuna Coil (EXCELLENT band, where can I order a CD??) and Nightwish (also EXCELLENT) but I'm looking for some other popular ones that have awesome music.

Similar bands are: Epica. Within Temptation, After Forever, Theatre Of Tragedy, Sirenia

The Obligatory "Off-the-wall but it's kind of in the remit" Suggestion:

Have you thought about Goth? By that I do NOT mean Marylin Manson, Evanescence etc. I mean actual Goth stuff from the 80s. I don't like a lot of it would suit you, but I'd recommend: The Sisters of Mercy, The Cult and The Cure.

On a side note, you might want to try out Unheilig as well. Their lyrics are in German, but tbh it really doesn't matter. Their album "Puppenspiel" is truly, deeply superb. Imagine Rammstein if they suddenly developed a sense of melody and got softer (in a Goth style).

I'd also throw in Diary of Dreams into the mix for good measure.

YouTube will give you a good taster.
