Smoking and drinking are hobbies too expensive for my tastes. I have better ways to rot my body from the inside.

I hate to sound like the voice of reason but, if you're wondering when and if you can pay bills, why don't you cancel all of your frivalties, like, oh I don't know, cable and internet access.
Cancelling my cable won't get me a job. The use of the Internet, on the other hand, can give me a leg up in acquiring one.

Don't know what to say \/\/0RF :/ . It sounds like you've been forced to do away with your principles and everything your sould believes in. Do your best, pace your life, stick to a timetable and keep clear objectives in mind. I hope you pull through mate because you really do sound like you love your wife a lot and you aren't such a bad fellow.

Sadly, my college plans have been on hold ever since the funding for Full Sail fell through last fall. If I don't figure something out RIGHT NOW, we are going to have much bigger problems than where I get my degree... or even whether or not I keep my cable turned on, for that matter.
Worf, I dunno. Your situation seems at odds with the socio-economic arguments you make in your many political threads here.

Most people on the left would argue for the putting in place of many measures which would help you out of your predicament, allowing you a solid base to get a leg up from. The college thing. Cant afford the fees? Explain your situation to the VEC and your fees would be waived. Having trouble finding good paying work and being forced to take low paid, unsatisfactory labour, hindering your search for real work and destroying your quality of life? Sign on for unemployment benefit, take a state funded training course and placement, visit your local employment office, meet with a field expert. Take your time, wait for a decent career opportunity, seize it and begin contributing again to the system that helped you out. Everyones a winner.

Housing under threat? Apply for rent allowance, again showing you are a genuine case, and gain security and peace of mind. Medical problems? Get free health care etc.

Are any of these measures available to you or would you shun them on principle maybe? I find the apparent contradiction between your situation and your political views pretty interesting.

That said, you could become a plumber. Theres always work for a good plumber, and apparently they are the happiest of any occupation.

Does the wife work? My wife has the real job while I manage a pizza biz 40 hours a week. Since we have cats instead of kids we do alright. I'll probably never have what you call a "real" job due to a felony conviction when I was twenty. I would love to have the opportunities open to you.

Twinkies? Guilt? You can't tease us with statements like this. It's not fair.

Everything happens for a reason. Why? I dont know.

Everything does happen for a reason. But it's not a very good reason.

The world doesn't work the way you'd like to think it does, MM. My wife's income alone disqualifies us from most of the support you're talking about. My parents' borrowing power disqualifies me from receiving grants on the basis of need, and even if I could arrange for independence in consideration, I would still need the work to pay for day-to-day living (rent, food, gas, etc), which in a fit of irony would make me too rich to qualify for those same grants.

Marriage is an act of mercy. My wife has forgiven me for the person I was in college. The real world is under no obligation to do the same. The system is designed for people who are in dire straits through no fault of their own. Our travails in the last couple years have been an epic lineage of misfortunes, but I've blown my share of chances in the past, which gave us a sub-optimal foundation for what's come since.

I didn't start this thread to cry about my problems, but to laugh about what Liz aptly noted as a karmic backlash. Crying doesn't do a bit of good, and this the bed that I made for myself. Might as well laugh as I lie in it. My only real fear is that I don't know what the next step is from here, but we each of us have families so there's a support system in place for us already. Either way I'm going to keep fighting for what I want. Why? Becuase that's what I HAVE to do. And THAT'S why the system works, not because it deigns to cater to my mediocrity.

It may be the beer talking, or the fact that my family is rich enough that I will never have to go begging to the government, but this "the state can be the solution to all your problems" post made me vomit :D

(Just think of going to Gordon Brown or Dick Cheney and saying "Please Sir, can I have some more?" There's your argument for libertarianism right there.)
