CliffyB On Big Game Releases

Cliff Bleszinski talks with MTV about the timing of big game releases. Here he comments on the last GamePro cover touting exclusive info on Gears of War 2.

It was total hogwash. They were just trying to sell magazines.

Gears of War 2 Officially Announced and Dated

After the teaser, Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski came on stage with a Gears of War full scale prop weapon to announce that Gears of War 2 is due out in November 2008. No other details were announced.

The comedy known as Epic Games PR never ceases to amaze me...

(Cool trailer though...)

Anyone else like how Epic Game's release date plans are so predictable?

I thought that was shipped, not sold?

Ah I see. There's a difference between the amount of copies that were made and sold to the retailers and the amount of copies that were actually bought by consumers. It's "sell in" vs "sell through". I'd guess the 1.2 million units is the "sell in" number, or the number of copies that were manufactured and sold to the retailers. The much smaller numbers that I first quoted could be the "sell through" copies, or the copies actually bought by customers.

Epic's potential profits are determined by their contract with Midway, so they might make their profit on either sell-in or sell-through, and who knows what that is. Either way, any profits made usually go towards paying left over expenses before they go to the employees or/and the company coffers. Also, Epic probably offsets the cost of making their games with some of the profits they gain from engine licenses, which probably allow them to risk making a game that potentially might not sell well. I really don't know though. I only worked contract for them so I never really saw the inner workings of the company and if I had, I probably wouldn't share that info. ;P I'm just speculating.

UT is a multiplayer game by default. People who buy UT dont do it for the solo campain so i dont see the problem.

Exactly my point. Because it's multiplayer by default, means that it's going to be a little less accessible to console users.

The problem is, most console customers are used to getting games with a fleshed-out singleplayer, story driven campaign. Most of the popular console games traditionally offer a fairly deep singleplayer experience. Why do you think Epic put more effort into creating the singleplayer story in UT3 more-so than they ever really had in previous UT games? Because for the first time, they were shifting their focus towards console gamers.

A game design like GoW, with it's well-done singleplayer and multiplayer promise is going to do better among console gamers than a multiplayer/bot-match only game like UT3.

The GamePro article was hogwash because they hadn't received any real information and anyone with half a brain could have written the article they did.

Probably not. Gears PC wasn't as well optimized as UTIII and had a whole rack of more bugs. That and Gears 2 announced for November 08. Thats not very far away and doesn't lead for an impressive dev time and goes against the when its done policy of Epic. Then again this is Cliffs baby so he can do whatever he pleases with it.

oh please.. they've been working on gears 2 for probably over a year now. Add 11 more months onto that and you've got two years. Just because they JUST announced it doesn't mean they JUST started development. They've been working on it, they just didn't tell you or us for that matter.

^^^ Shane Kim of MS already said that Gears 2 was being worked on before Gears 1 was even finished. He said this on AOTS last night when they interviewed him from the GDC. What this means is that Gears 3 is already in serious development and so is UE4, of course Epic just cannot say ONE word about this level of progression just yet. Also CliffyB said that G2 is exclusive to the 360 for now. So PC users will be waiting for about a year once ago while MS first makes all the money they can on the 360 ... then they will make this one of their Games for Windows titles a year later when it is then available on the PC. Since MS is the publisher they want this on both of their gaming platforms but they push the more expensive and more profitable version first. Because the 360 is in soooo many households and will be in even more by the time G2 comes out MS will be soley focused on the 360 version for a while. Also I now believe more than ever that Epic will indeed be purchased by MS before the beginning of 2009. Making every Epic employee an instant millionaire (the stock portion of the deal will be substantial, watch). If it was ever the time to get on board with Epic that time is now.

I still don't get why GoW wont run on so many peoples computers.. It runs flawlessly on mine with maxed settings.

Anyway, I'll be waiting for the GoW2 PC release

Yeah I know that much but it still seems kinda soonish to announce Gears 2 in my opinion but it might not be a bad thing. Yes they may have been working on it under wraps but I didn't expect it as soon as I did.

How is it soon if they have been working on the game for over 18 months already? This is not a brand new game where they have to create all the assets from scratch. They are not going to another planet so they don't have to make any new environments that are wildly different from anything we have seen before. Even if they through in a new creature or two it won't be anything that takes them long to do considering it will be an extension of the locust and pretty much their look is already set. So it seems to me that really it is about the right amount of time. Two and a half years approximately and two years from the release of the first one. Definitely seems reasonable and gives them the extra time they need to beta test it and polish it. The one thing that bothers me is that there is no open mp beta test period like Bungie did with Halo 3 to make sure MP play was super smooth (which it is).

For those of you who say two years isn't enough time to make a good game, just look at COD4. It was released 2 years after COD2 and turned out to be a GOTY winner.

Cliffy B is such an asshat in that video.... Er, well, all the time actually.

I can't believe he's the lead designer of that entire company. UT is screwed in light of this money-raking, half-assed crap. :(

I still have an orange box mindset where we had to wait for a long time for Episode 2 and Portal and others.

Those honestly took a lot longer than they should have. I'd be very surprised if TF2 and Portal hadn't been done for several months or more before TOB was released.

Actually I was reading zeropunctuation on that dudes trip to valve, it did reveal alittle on how they work, I found that rather interesting. I thought they just worked on the whole chain of command type dealy, then again alot of companies could operate similarly.
