Gers of War 2 Officially Announced and Dated

FiringSquad is running a story that at the end of Microsoft's GDC '08 keynote, Gears of War 2 was officially announced and dated.

After the teaser, Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski came on stage with a Gears of War full scale prop weapon to announce that Gears of War 2 is due out in November 2008. No other details were announced.

Shock and awe!!!!!! Nobody saw this coming from a mile away, for sure!

UPDATE: Slainchild linked us to a copy of the teaser trailer.

Yeah. I'm sure everyone was shocked... Yeah... Right. Too bad Cliff is so bought out by MS compared to the rest of Epic.

It will probably be better polished than UT3 also.

Probably not. Gears PC wasn't as well optimized as UTIII and had a whole rack of more bugs. That and Gears 2 announced for November 08. Thats not very far away and doesn't lead for an impressive dev time and goes against the when its done policy of Epic. Then again this is Cliffs baby so he can do whatever he pleases with it.

Not true if you ask me at least ... I have both games and though Gears has some bugs that are bad so does UT3 ... in fact UT3 has more bugs and is more unstable imo ... they have made improvements to UT3 while Gears still struggles a bit. But Gears PC is solid imo.

My Gears doesn't even work on my PC. I get at most a single frame of movement every 10 to 20 seconds on menus if I'm using the interface yet if i alt tab and use the game windowed. While using other programs it runs fine. At least this is what I have on my end. Either way Gears is a good game but for 2 to be announced so soon and to be released so quickly doesn't feel right to me. November 08...

First there was no GOW2. Now suddenly it's here and it will be released at the end of this year! :)

PC GOW also worked very well on my rig. Very quick loading times, just that.

Wha...?

The game has obviously been in development since early last year. The engine is already "done". All they have to do is make a bunch of new content, a script, and lay it down. November 2008 is probably a logistical timeframe more than a practical one, since they can make it coincide with Emergence Day again. A Gears a year is not a bad marketing move, tbfh.

UT2004 had about an 18 month development schedule, and that was alongside support for UT2003. I think Epic has made it pretty clear that it's the engine development that holds them back in speed more than anything.

Also they announced what Engine they are going to use:

Just confirmed at GDC that GOW2 uses the redone Unreal 3 engine which has new lighting techniques. Looks awesome btw.

The trailer kinda gives me the feeling of max payne "comic strip scenes" - maybe its just me :p

I hope there is some kinda "block" to the chainsaw (and not just promo stuff) that would add a bit of extra to the game, chainsawing became quite easy at times. Maybe when nade tagging the block would just to be to hold onto the hand so they can't run off :p

Its a matter of time before MS buys Epic, imo.

As for GoW2, it was a no-brainer. Of course, it might have been 2009, but MS needed to keep the pressure with a top notch line-up of titles. Which they have, best line-up for the 2nd year in a row IMO.

I don't know why. It might be possible for Epic to pull this off but. Something just seems off beat or wrong to me about this. I don't know why.
