Securom. Just like Mass Effect, Spore, Far Cry 2, etc.
It doesn't require activation as far as I can tell, so that's something. And someone somewhere suggested only the launcher is protected with Securom and you don't really need it for installing or playing. No matter if that's true or not: no activation -> it's on my to buy list and I'll probably order it this weekend.

How do you tell if a Steam game has SecuROM? So far I haven't noticed anything odd about starting any games supposedly protected by SecuROM on Steam, and I have Alcohol 120%, Daemon Tools and Process Explorer all running on my machine (all programs that supposedly interfere with SecuROM).

On topic, I am not sure I've ever played a game where you actually start the game at "being born".

I saw a video review and I'm still even less tempted in this game. The animations are terrible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdURPbKUKZY

Watch 2:10 and especially 3:45.
Welcome to 1995? I know it's not meant to be a shooter, but damn... 9.6? **** me.

Got my copy, I can't wait to dive into it later today.

Don't you think you're being just a tad narrow-minded? Oblivion had the same issues you're pointing out, but that didn't stop it from being a great game. There was a lot more to the game than the combat and the presentation. Of course it would've been nice if it had been cleaned up a bit since then (after all Oblvion came out 2½ years ago), but considering everything else the game has to offer I really couldn't care less - it didn't hinder me from completing every quest available to me in Oblivion.

I'm not attacking you, I just feel sorry for you if you can't enjoy a great game because of a few petty issues like poor character animations. I also find it odd that you need to question the validity of a review score because the game seemingly doesn't cater to your tastes. 9.6 is more or less on par with the rest of the reviews so far it seems.

Had my first session with it last night/this morning. It's another Bethesda game alright. I completely lost track of time, and my session turned out to be just short of 8 hours before I realized I'd not sleep more than 4 hours before work.

It is essentially Oblivion but with a different setting and guns. V.A.T.S. is pretty much a necessity (seeing as it has inaccuracy built in, no precise shockbeams on the crosshairs in this game) and so far it has proven to be pretty awesome.

I like this part of the Shacknews review

For example, a computer terminal in a newspaper office--a building that one might simply pass by if they weren't careful, and which serves no purpose other than to provide backstory--contained several articles pre-war articles, one of which explained how the US annexed Canada.
Just knowing that this material exists to be discovered can be enough to make the world feel like a real location, rather than a mess of buildings and AI characters. Even if you don't stop to explore a single house, the fact that there might be something to find behind those doors makes it that much more exciting of a game.

I just played some "Reign of Grelok beta" mini text adventure game inside a comic book publishing building and found some naughty nightwear in a subway tunnel. I can't imagine what else is out there just waiting.

Yeah, I just did that as well. I was hoping there'd be some kind of reward for beating it, but alas...all I got was grenade in my freaking face when searching the rest of the room. Some of the traps in this game are absolutely vicious. I also ran into a gang of Super Mutants outside after exiting the building (I didn't enter through the head entrance), that was a pretty terrifying moment seeing as I hadn't encountered them before and they were pretty heavily armed. They don't seem so tough now, though.

Might as well share a handful of snapshots as well:

The stand is in my house in Megaton. I think there is also one at Tenpenny Tower if you decide Megaton is better off as a large pile of rubble.

Oh, I see. I didn't even realize you could get a house there, but I've also yet to deal with Mr. Burke's quest. I keep getting sidetracked.
