So you're a Doom fanboy? Is being a Doom fanboy better than being an Unreal fanboy?
Well I've got it now and have played through about 3 or 4 hours of SP and done some multiplayer. Multiplayer could be fun with some more playing. It doesn't seem that great for 1v1, but I imagine 3 or 4 players would be cool. I've only played it for about 45 minutes though so time will tell. It's certainly not fast paced like Q3 or UT2k4, but instead you sneak around turn off and on lights and ambush people. The rocket laucher sucks.
Singleplayer is really cool, but after a while you start to expect the demons to pop out from that dark corner and they get somewhat predictable. There are plenty of cool moments where something different/crazy will happen, which is a good thing. I personally can't wait to get out of the whole metal wall panel area though. It's starting to get repetitive.
The lighting and stuff is great, though I'd say it's on par with, or maybe a little better, than FarCry. FarCry's dynamic lighting is used very subtly whereas Doom3 heavily depends on it for mood and atmosphere. The normal maps are used to great effect, especially on player models. All the map geometry normal maps look good until to get right up close to them (like a wall) and you realize that it's all fairly low-res normal mapped textures. But that's not Doom3's fault or anything; that's just the current state of normal maps in any currently released game. FarCry had some fairly low-res normal maps in some places also.
Overall, it's a great game so far. Maybe a little over-hyped, but still very good.
