Sinistral, you should buy it because the authors have given you access to their work, trusting that you will pay for it if you keep it after you decide whether or not you will use it.

i don't pay for any of the programs i use, why would i pay for shareware. I know, i am a bitch, but oh well :p send the feds after me or something. I like to see whats out there. I try out pirated games to see if i like them. most games i don't like, so i trash them and don't buy them. There haven't been very many pc games that have been worth my money in a while. the last game i bought for pc was unreal tournament, and that was after about 7 months of playing a pirated copy. before that, i think it was civilization 2. i try not to download shareware, most of the stuff i end up installing sucks, and there is a perfectly good pirated version put out by some huge company somewhere anyways. the people who coded the program for that company got paid anyways, so whatever.

Stealing software online or through a friend is no different from shoplifting a copy from CompUSA or Best Buy. Remember when UT came out and people where looking for CD cracks? The people at Epic depend on revenues from sales. They worked hard and deserve to be paid.

I am not sure where this mentality that stealing software is somehow moral. These thieves say, "I can't afford this software, so its OK if I steal it" Let them try using that excuse if they get caught stealing at a retail store.

Smart shareware authors put time limits on their demo products. Otherwise, they will have a large user base but see little sales. There are too many botton feeders that can't be trusted to pay.

I buy shareware I find useful. Vueprint and Cool Page come to mind. I bought Paint Shop Pro at CompUSA

Oreca, I can't afford many things I want. So does that mean its Ok if I steal? I don't mean to be harsh, I am just making a point. :)

Its like this thing with Napster. I think its OK for Napster to post one or two songs so people can sample what is on a CD before they buy it. And its Ok for them to post an entire CD if the artist OKs it. But to post an entire CD without permission is stealing. Not all bands are rich. They need the money to survive.

Oreca I pretty much see your side of the picture..considering I'm pretty much on the same side. I cannot afford to buy a lot of games either. So I usally save up for the really special ones like UT. I enjoyed the demo so much I knew I wanted the game and despite having t1 access in the dorms I bought the game. I know it's kinda hypocritical considering I own so many pirated apps but atleast try and do your part for stuff that you enjoy.

I see your point ;)
If it wasn't for a friend who burnt UT and invited me over I would never of been here, at first when I saw UT I said it was a shitty game, and boy I was wrong, although I don't play it anymore I think it's the best game i've played for a while.
[dreams]If just the prices for software would go down[/dreams]

the only things i have pirated are the stuff that costs over 200 bux, because i can't EVER afford it (i mean come on, i'm a college student!)

but games, i buy few games, but I play the hell out of them.. UT has gotten hundreds of hours of use, same with D2. I just bought Black and White and Tribes 2, that should do me fine for a while.

I have never bought shareware, but mostly because I don't find many that I feel are worth the money (10 bucks for a screensaver? yeah right!). I almost bought WinAmp, but it became freeware within a few weeks of my considering paying for it. I'm also getting close to buying MiRC, I use it enough.

I own a lot of pirated software, i admit. i've got very little money, but i buy what i can afford. i am building up towards being fully legitimate, i just can't afford some of the apps. all of my games that i use now are legit, but i can't afford to buy software such as win2k, or ms office just yet. when i can, i will, as it is, i am trying them out, knowing that i will pay in the end. don't forget, i'm in the uk, and to give an idea of price difference, these are the prices for win2k pro, both taken from amazon.
US $$248.99
UK £278.57
let's bare in mind, £1 = $1.6 (aprox) meaning that in £, the US version would cost £155.62, practically half price! we get ripped off completely here, you pay $29.99 for a game, we pay £29.99. i have my reasons, believe me, for not being able to afford any software

morals shmorals, i am an opportunist. I have this great opportunity presented to me in the internet. If i find a dollar on the sidewalk, i am going to pick it up. If i find a car on the side of the road with the keys in it and a sign that says "take me" on the side, i will take it. If i were in a store, and they announced that all the employees were having an emergency and would all be leaving for a half hour and that we should go about our business, i would jack shit left and right. I don't like to have to pay for things that i don't really need. if i can borrow them, i will. if the opportunity is presented to me that i don't have to pay for them, i will take it. basically if i can steal them and get away with it, i will. this makes me a very selfish person, yesit may sound bad, but thats what happens. i feel very little remorse pirating software and music. no, i don't go out of my way to shoplift, and yes, i am personally responsible for the decline of morals in today's society.

Wow! After reading some of these comments I feel like an ass for the "getright" thing (see my first post in thread) I didn't do that because I was poor or that I wanted to steal I was just curious to see if I could throw random numbers at the register and get it to work. One of the things that I love about Computer games vice console is that they are so cheap. Well maybe not at first but if a game is good but not great I will wait a few months to buy it when it hits the 19.99 mark. However 39.99 really isn't that much to pay for a great game. I've read articles on how much the makers of games acutally pull in after all thier production and marketing bills are paid and damn it isn't much. I buy game the games I like and encourage others to do so because by buying the game you tell it's creators that you like thier product and you want them to continue making games. If everyone only used priate versions of UT then there would never be a UT2. If you can't afford a game don't steal it grow up, get a damn job, and save so that you can buy it!

I have purchased shareware. And will go right on doing so, if I feel that it meets a need for me. One perfect example of shareware that has bailed my ass out on numerous times, is Lorenz Graf's HTML tool. On my first and worst website hosting with Gameseek, it was that simple little program that cost me 25 dollars that saved my ass more than one. I didn't know jack about HTML back then...and it taught me alot, and STILL teaches me something new everytime. Even after I graduated to DreamWeaver I still check my HTML with LGT.

The only shareware I have purchased is an email program call "The Bat."

I've never had it crash. It is a little different to use, but it is targeted toward people that know what they are doing, or are willing to take the time to learn how to use the advanced functions. Additionally, it is immune to most viruses. The only thing I don't like about it is it does not display inline graphics on HTML email. The reason behind this is to prevent web bugs from being downloaded in your email. I think they will probably add the ability to enable/disable graphics in the future though.

http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/index.html

Other than that, most of the shareware I've downloaded I really don't think is worth two cents, and I don't use much shareware as a result.

As for illegal software, I think the companies deserve their due credit for their products, but at the same time they have set themselves up for the excessive amount of illegal copies distributed and cracked. The reason, most people can't afford it. The software companies could sell affordably priced versions of their software, and charge for the extra features. This would allow people to buy the features they need, and not have to pay for the features they don't want.

Nepenthe,

Oddly, you are about the 5000th person to ask me that. Sounds like the media is making this seem like California has the power off more than it is on.

I live in an exempt area. It was made exempt after the power to the police and fire stations, as well as the courthouse and jail went out in January.

So, downtown Sacramento gets to keep the lights on.

So who is gonna pay them on the next project? thats right nobody so if eveeryone stops supporting developers (by buying shareware) then the end of programs and gaming is near.....
