Oh come on... Serpentine is fine for a tense one on one match with a bot. It's a great novelty map and not at all intended as a serious duel map. :D

BTW, the author is Lee "Eepers" Perry, formerly of ION Storm, SquareSoft, and Black Ops. He also helped with DM-TrainingDay (that map shouldn't even be selectable) and DM-Plunge, and authored DOM-Suntemple (nice little map) and BR-Skyline. I've seen him credited for Joust, but I was thinking that Joe Wilcox did that one for some reason.

Anyhow, he's now a lead level designer at Epic, so I hope no one does any Cobra antics.

Are Citadel and Corrugation Epic? Anyway, no, not really. They seem to value visuals and "Oooh, look what I can do with the engine!" over fun-ness and gameplay and gimmicks over substance. It's not that I won't play them, but I won't go out of my way to do so. When you look at the maps I will go out of my way to play, Epic made none to maybe a couple of them.

Am I supposed to like Epic maps? They've got quite the track record with Gael, TrainingDay, Plunge, IronDeity, IceTomb, Curse3, Inferno, etc. Even the UT2004 maps are lacking. It's like they made the maps to conform to the single player ladder, which they do pretty well, but neglected the online community. No one really wants to play Trite. :p

IIRC, Serpentine was originally a Quake3 map, which was renamed and prettied up for UT2k3 (by the original author, who as Hal states, now works at Epic).
I kind of snickered at this fact when I found out about it.
I mean it's the EXACT layout of the Q3A map, lol.
(another scar on 2k3's armor, shortcut here, rush rush there)

I should mention though, that I kinda enjoy the trench fighting... well, the first few times I did.

Any map where hitscan dominates every area sucks. I'm a hitscan hoar so it doesn't mean I don't like playing those maps, but I know that they're lacking in playability and fun factor. Rockets are more fun than lightning could ever hope to be, but their usefulness and effectiveness are severely cut short in a lot of maps.

I would totally hump your mom, but I know she is a dog-faced troll. ;)

I don't understand your logic... It seems your point is that you are so outside the normal curve of players that logic doesn't apply to you.

/playerhate :p

Anyway, I just dl'ed the new version of the map. I loved the first version, and I can't wait to play this one and see what it's like. :D
MMM mushrooms.

P.S. I love Serpentine! Anyone who wants to 1v1 me there add me to buddies. :D
I will leave anything but a pug to play you in it.

Not every map has to perfectly balance open and closed areas for the differing play styles. It's nice that most do... but I can overlook the nuisance of reducing the effectiveness of all but three or so of the weapons since they are particularly well crafted maps.

Grendelkeep just doesn't lend itself as well to 1v1 as it does a small TDM or FFA because Grendel needs a little chaos to keep those hitscan h0s off balance.

Goliath has a couple of large areas where hitscan dominates, but again... it's a TDM/FFA map - and while hitscan players tend to do especially well, there is enough variety that at least gives us projectile players a shot. :)

But none of those things make the maps suck.

Then replace ¨suck¨ with ¨not very fun due to lack of balance¨. And you don´t have to BE pro to feel the hate for Goliath... you just have to be playing AGAINST pros. All the really good clans seem to love it. Give me some rocket spam on Campgrounds any day, but then the pros complain that it´s a ¨newb¨ map because they don´t predict well in TDM and they don´t know how to run it.

I didn´t think anyone really played Grendelkeep anymore for competition, but who knows. I like Grendel at any rate. It´s fun. You can get good use out of the rockets and flak if you´re very sneaky. On Goliath that´s just friggin impossible.

Goose is a good example of a map that is superior to Goliath because of the way it balances weapon usage. Antalus, (believe it or not), same. Corrugation also.

Anyways, T2A you are hereby invited to visit me for hot manlove if the urge ever grips you. It´s kind of a trip but I´m worth it.

And a disclaimer, anyone is free to ignore my opinions completely if they so choose because it´s been so long since I played, I have a feeling my ¨legit-ness¨ has expired. ;)

good one!

excellent cave map with good detail but maybe a couple more weapon pickups and moving a few would help make it better; great AVA that could be even better with custom music; I think it’s still fun even though some may think it is not balanced and remember different strokes for different folks.:)
