Yup. If that isn't enough you might also want to try super high shadow detail [check both shadow detail boxes] or place some lights with small radii around complicated brushes. Also make sure to have a little bit of zonelighting to avoid totally black faces.

And if that isn't enough, make the black surfaces 'unlit'.
Then they're just the basic texure, not affected by light.
Making big surfaces that look the same with lighting and in texture view unlit can do great stuff with performance.
But then again, shadow of houses, big tanks and oil pumping installations (DS-Arid :p), etc. won't look as good...

i once wanted to have a bradley prefab where the turret isnt attached to the rest of the brush ..so i can rotate it or let it rotate ;) (by a mover or so *cough* )
