Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.

Seems so funny. The liberals were so hell bent , that our civil rights were being violated under Bush, but with Obama taking his powers to the extreme.. they don’t seem to care? Great principles there!

Reading over that quickly it seems to be only for a cyber emergency as if those companies computers were compromised by an attacking country etc. For example if China launched a cyber attack to bring down some system in an effort to make some other kind of attack possible or easier. I don't think this is to control the people kind of thing.

This is all just right-wing backlash because of people not liking how the Bush Administration had one written up to only control the people. This is very different.

IIRC, this bill only affects government controlled networks. They won't be cutting off access to BuF, for example. That's beyond the scope of the bill.

linked article said:
CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft of S.773 (excerpt), which still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency.

Yeah if you read the article you'd see this has nothing to do with Obama. The original bill (which was rewritten by a democrat to be LESS invasive) was written by a Republican.

Either way, kill it. It's still treading on bad waters.

Err -- I was wrong when I reread it...

The original bill was co-written by the Democrat AND Republican, and then it was amended by the Dem to be less invasive ((though was worded vaguely enough that the original connotation could still be interpreted legally)). {{Still nothing to do with Obama though}}

As for the above comment asking how to kill the Bill?

I'd say Uma Thurman would be good enough.

Looks to me like it was co-written by a Democrat and a Republican, then redrafted with the help of another Democrat :p

Edit: Doh, I misread. But nothing in that page suggests that the Democrat partner wasn't part of the original bill.

Anyway, long story short -- regardless of party I think we both agree that bill is Bull****.

All it needs is "Child Porn THINK OF THE CHILDREN" to be complete and total tripe.

Communication infrastructure is one of those times that strongly leaning toward Laissez-Faire is the most beneficial for your citizens (and nation as a whole)

And did you know we should shut down P2P networks because of Child Porn? Andrew Lack, CEO of Sony Music was pushing for it to be shut down for that reason o.o Ignore that he's from Sony Music... he's really concerned about Child Porn... honest. It's totally a Government issue... protect the children...

Up my ass
If this bill went through, I would start agreeing with Sir_Brizz on everything. Then again this was written by a republican, and has nothing to do with Obama, like others have already pointed out.

Bill wont pass no matter what. There have been so many attempts by republicans to censor the hell out of the internet, and nothing ever happens.
