This is byfar the most frustrating game since Desert Combat - in terms of the interface, damage variables and gameplay...
Oh...wait...
Na, who am I kidding? It's sweet that soldiers can take three shots of 7.62 NATO to the head. God bless that sniper rifle.
Actually if you do any basic modding for the BF games, you'll find that the damage system is quite advanced for a "arcade type" shooter. Basically every weapon gets a base damage, and then you set the effective range, and how fast the weapon decreases in strength beyond that range, and when the projectile impacts a target, it uses an angle of impact (0 degress = straight on with full power, 45 is half, and 89 degrees means you just winged it so nearly no damage) to give a percentage to whatever the remaining damage value is.
But.. ya the damage values themselves are a littlel weak, but i just shrug it off as better body armor in the future, and that lets me suspend my disbelief.
But i think from a gameplay point of view it's got all the balance issues worked out nicely. No one team has a decidedly better selection of weapons, yet there are some variations in the performance of the different weapons in each class.
The US SF for example i think has the best overall carbine, but it's somewhat balanced by the fact the US has the slowest sniper rifle. The chinese i think have the best default sniper, but the thier ak47 isn't accurate as the m16, so their snipers have to cover the Gap in effective medium- long range shooting.
