Just wondering if anyone on this forum is a fan of anime (Japanese animation)? I've got to get my total number of posts up somehow. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

NGE, serial experiments lain, Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Record of the Lodoss Wars, Grave of the Fireflies, Mononoke Hime, Ghost in the Shell, Vision of Escaflowne... gah! There's just too much good anime out there. Grave of the Fireflies is probably one of my favorites, completely NOT what people expect from anime, and an incredbly powerful film to boot(Don't bother with it though if you have no attention span /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )

Nuff said...

Also maybe Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Record of the Lodoss War, Dragonball-Z... but nothing can touch Robotech really.

I don't mean to be a non-conformist but I think anime is pretty c-rate artwork. I mean come-one the people have hair like they shoved a fork in a electrical socket or something. Anime eyes are enlarged to a huge size and they usually have no pupils.. Anime is the only cartooning I've known to have animated blood/gore to an extreme entext as well as sexual themes. And why is it that everytime something exciting happens the background gets all colorful and it's going like 900 miles per hour while they're doin' stunts in mid-air.. Its so unrealistic, it's like a cult, you can't go anywhere these days without seeing a Dragon Ball Z shirt or a pokemon shirt.. It's crazy. This artwork isn't professional nor exspressive.

I'm sorry if I offeneded any anime-lovers out there /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

AgentSmith: It's a matter of taste, really. I happen to think the stylized look of anime is rather nice. And, of course, the look depends on the artist who's doing the work.

As for your analysis of anime's content, realise that anime/manga is just an art style. You can find any genre of traditional film in anime(even porn...

ek: ), and some of them are pretty damn crappy. Dragonball Z is REALLY overblown style, not animated very well, and despite it's populatiry is hardly the best series out there. Pokemon isn't even worth mentioning in this discussion- Sure, it's anime, but it has no place next to the other stuff mentioned in the thread /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If you want to see some anime of a diffrent caliber, try and find Grave of the Fireflies or serial experiments lain. You still may not like them, of course, but don't think every bit of anime out there is like DBZ/Pokemon/Sailor Moon =P

Well, I supose so.. I've come to the conclusion that most anime shows/movies have more creative and better storylines, but then lack the good animating talents of other cartooning. I dunno, I heard from my Japanese friend that in Japan little kids watch anime-porn and I'm thinkin' what are they thinking? Japan obviousley has a different definition of what is socially acceptable. Ex. In ninja scrolls, like someone mentioned in this thread.. my friend told me about this and it shocked me, I heard someone got raped, people were decapatated, impaled, dismembered.. the whole 9-yards.. Now don't get me wrong I'm not some pansy that clenches at the sight of blood, in a matter of fact I enjoy a few gore-filled movies now and then but this Anime stuff just has a shady reputation looming under (or over).. My thoughts were that cartoons were for kids, I've never heard of a cartoon wear people were dismembered.. I can safely say EVERY anime film I have seen, someone has either gotten brutally dismembered or tortured.. the women are drawn like anorexic prostitutes and it just plain doesn't intrest me.. I'm just not an anime-guy, sorry.

The best examples of what anime can be (at least in my opinion) is Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Those were the first two anime movies that I ever saw (aside from the Thundercats/Transformers/Voltron TV shows, but I didn't even know they were anime at the time). Both movies are hi-quality films with deep storylines and spectacular special effects.

Akira and GitS are both good, but I think lain and Grave of the Fireflies are better examples of what anime can be. NGE is decent in that respect too, with the religous stuff in there.

Oh, and if you liked Akira, there's going to be a re-printing of the manga in it's original black and white here in the states. Defently worth picking them up if you're a fan, the mangas are almost always better than the movie, in both plot and art quality /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The part of Akira that scared the mortal piss outta me was where the teddy bears come to life and everything starts bleeding milk and that weird ass trippy "dink-dink" music is playing in the background. I have a fear of inamite things coming to life. Anybody remember that ISO-9000 level from Earth Worm Jim 2 that had the jumping filing cabinets? I hid behind my friends chair while I made him play through it. He laughed. I kicked his ass.

I WANT MY TENTACLE RAPE PORN!

If anybody doubts that the Japanese are sexually messed up, they can openly by the soiled panties of young school girls and are obsessed with violent rapings, but full frontal nudity is outlawed. I question those judgments, really

Oh, and AgentSmith, if thats how you feel I suggest you avoid the masterpiece A Clockwork Orange. I think Clockwork Orange would make a wicked anime remake.

I haven't really seen all that much anime, but Appleseed, and Akira were the best ones by far. I also thought that The Bubblegum Crisis was pretty good, and, believe it or not, Fist of the North Star.
