A jump like that is HUGE! Wow. And I just got a new mobo/cpu a month ago, and already I feel like I'm standing beside Arnie Schwarzenigger. :(

I ripped this off of Gamespot. Old news by now...but holy cow!! 2Ghz???? Time to trade in the 'ol p2400!

quote:
The next-generation CPU, previously known by its codename, Willamette, is announced as the Pentium 4.

Intel announced today that its upcoming microprocessor, formerly known as Willamette, will be named the Pentium 4 when it's released this fall.

The Pentium 4 marks the biggest change in the core architecture of Intel's consumer processors since the Pentium Pro's innovations were worked into the Pentium II. The pipeline has doubled in length, which makes it easier to greatly increase the chip's frequency. Clock speeds for the Pentium 4 are expected to start at 1.4GHz and ramp up towards 2GHz.

The Pentium 4 will have some substantial advantages over the Pentium III processor, which made its debut in 1998. The memory bus will use data-doubling technology to reach its 400MHz speed, which is up from the Pentium III's 100 or 133MHz bus. Other features include 144 new SIMD instructions and support for Rambus' expensive RDRAM.

From what I understand, very few of the motherboard manufacturers will support the new Willamette. This is due to the fact that the Pentium 5 (codename : Tulloch) is scheduled to be released in about 8 to 12 months time.
Think I'll wait for the PV then :(
Damn, things are moving too fast!

I'm not upgrading my Thunderbird till I can buy a terahertz proc.

Ok, I'm lying. I'll trade in my 1ghz for a 1.01 ghz just to be the best on the block.

If it doesn't move, climb it. Or, if it moves real slow, that's OK too. Like old people.

yea i heard bout that too...

but it will still be another 6 months - year before our p2's/celerons will be turned into junk... the p4s still have to go mainstream which the gigahertz now hasn't even done (i think, probably wrong though)...

but i'm very concerned about that rambus ram we're going to have to use... 1000 bux for a stick of 128mb? ouch...

and they still haven't found a good replacement for the bx...

i dont think intel is that dumb to force us to use there memory, they have competition now so they're smarter, i believe DDR will be out around the time we have a 1.5gig

i doubt it..
technology, as it gets older, gets cheaper.. so either Intel/AMD/etc will create an artificial shortage (like OPEC did with oil) to jack prices up.. otherwise people will be able to buy a 512-bit 3000 teragigamegahertz CPU for a quarter.. and a couple gig of ram for $0.10.. (granted, that scenerio is a bit extreme, the companies wouldn't let their top of the line products get that cheap anyway) or keep making "bigger and better" things and ignore the prices for the lesser products and charge an insane amount for their current thing.. and believe me, software developpers will find ways to utilize most of the "biggest and best" hardware out there ('specially game manufacturers)

just the simple concept of competition (and oh do we love it so) will force companies in the computer industry to come out with new things

does anyone still care about the x86 line? intel will soon release the itanium, which is vastly superior to any 32-bit pentuim and much better than amd's 64-bit chip.

also, hz, khz, mhz, ghz, etc.. are not true indicators of a processor's speed. they just measure the clock speed of the processor. for example, 233mhz processor has 233,000,000 clock ticks in one second. what actually matters is how much is processed in between these clock ticks. that is why athlons are better than celerons which are better than cyrixes, etc...
