You may have noticed the report a few days ago that Midway was dropping all "non-core" licenses. Well, we sent off an e-mail to Epic's Mark Rein to find out more. According to Mark, not only is Midway still publishing for and partnering with Epic, but they are also working together on a "major expansion for UT3". Here it is, straight from the horse's mouth:

Our arrangement with Midway isn't a license but rather a straight publishing agreement and Midway is still very much the publisher of Unreal Tournament 3. In fact, we're working together on a major expansion to Unreal Tournament 3, that we expect will excite and grow our UT3 customer base which incidentally, now numbers over a million units sold-through world-wide.

So far, no release plans or dates have been set. Will this be a retail package or a free download? Only time will tell.

Definitely going to wait on a few reviews before I throw down anymore money on UT3.

Hooray!!!

I was beginning to fear that the Unreal franchise was pretty much died out by now, but this news proves that Epic hasn't turned its back on this franchise and fans yet.

Yay for Epic I say!

(And hopefully this time people will be happy for a change. I definitely am!)

Well, it's pretty obvious that UT3 needs some attention from epic side. I hope it really is an expansion pack rather than a new release of the game, because i'm not really sure I want to buy another "UT2004".
...tbh i'm pretty sure i don't want to buy another "UT2004".

ok, i'm trying to be cautious with my statement because this is nothing specific but it's great to hear that something big is on the way.
a new UI?
a huge patch that turns the game into a real PC game?
more maps?
all of the above?

so many possibilities!
in a way i'd like to see the same thing that happened with UT2003/2004. i mean, ideally the game would have been in a 'counterpart of UT2004' state when it was released but it would still be nice.
anyway, this really got me curious.

I'll take another UT2004 any day (strictly speaking level of improvement and content).

UT3 with a major functionality overhaul, a few tweaks under the hood, and some new content/modes would be awesome.

I wouldn't bet... (well anything you value to be honest :-)) on it.
You can consider me absolutely flabber-****ing-gasted if in this appalling economic climate, you will get this expansion for free.

If it is going to be retail... is that going to work? It seemed that a lot of people who bought the game weren't that happy with it, so are people going to be willing to pour more cash into a game they didn't manage to appreciate?
Or maybe they will try the Warhead approach - making the expansion standalone.

I'm not sure that I'm that happy that the publisher that didn't advertise the game (for the PC - wasn't worth it ;)) is still publishing this title.

Don't get me wrong though, I do want more UT, so I am glad about the announcement.

Heres hoping they -

Redo the GUI (Like UT2004 redone 2003)
Bring back ASSAULT !
Some new, varied player models/speech
New map locations

Do that and BAM success (imo) ! Hope we hear more about this soon.

Personally I'd rather see longer maplists for the modes that are already there instead of new gamemodes. A return of Domination would be nice, though (provided it's the classical Domination), but ever since UT2004 I don't care much for Assault. It was awesome in UT, but the UT2004 version plainly stank IMHO (although the core gameplay features like the excessive movement combined with Kevin Riepl's annoying music might've been the main cause of that).
