While playing, I always see the most original, funny, and strange names.
Lot of times I wonder how you all got the names.

From some players I can see where they got it from ...
From others I haven't got a clue ...
Sometimes I don't even know what they mean ...
From some I think I don't want to know ...

At first I wanted to make the following POLL:
1) It's related to my real name.
2) It's a name given by my friends.
2) I look like it.
3) I want to look like it.
5) Saw or heard it somewhere, and thought it was funny.
6) I have used it for years, and don't know anymore where it came from.
7) I needed a name, and it was the first thing which sprung into my mind.
I decided not to make a poll, because I was curious about the explanations.

CoolDude
Myself, I don't know exactly where it came from.
In the past I thought I was a cool guy (or at least I tried to be).
Of course, I needed a name which related to that.
That's when I started using it, I think it was just after seeing the Blues Brothers movie.
I use it for a couple of years now when playing on the net and in different forums, always with the same avatar.

Now this will be an interesting thread to watch over the next few days..... :)

For myself - I've just been using the Zappa name for ages and ages....
When I joined the SETI@Home Project I used Zappa as my user name and that was 4yrs ago......
All the characters in the various games I've played have had Zappa attached to them.....

Obviously - I'm a fan of the music of Frank Zappa :D

So I choose #7 on the poll that wasn't a poll :D

The Origin Of Katana

Back in 1999 (20th Century  ) when i first starting going on the net and in chatrooms i didn't have a good nickname besides daniel15uk and crap like that.

I was also a huge Metal Gear Solid fan in '99 and the ninja (grey fox) in it carried a really cool sword. I didn't know what kind of sword it was so i looked it up on the net and it was apprently a Katana, a japanese ninja sword.

Grey Fox (Ninja) with Katana

I thought it sounded good so i used it for my nickname. It does often get confused for Kitana (mortal kombat) but its easy enough to set the record straight :stick:

Thats the origin of my nickname, my real name is Daniel incase u didn't guess from the first sentence.
I'll say #7 on your poll CoolDude.
I'm interested in how Sexmachine and Mychaeel got there nicknames.

Dude at school called everyone <their name>Dog, so I was Spoondog - I first started on the internet by getting a hotmail address, and [email protected] was taken, so I used TheSpoonDog, and it kinda stuck, but I'm gradually fading into just Spoondog coz I like it better.

btw my real name is Cory Spooner, so thats where the Spoon comes from :D

Ok then, my explanation about my nickname:

I have a fascination for vampires, blood, serial killers, etc. Years ago a friend gave me a book about Countess Erzsébet Báthory ( 1560-1614 ) She killed 650 young girls.

"The legend of Erzsébet Báthory is still very much alive today. Nicknamed the "Blood Countess of Hungary" and "Countess Dracula", myths claim her to be one of the first real life vampires. The media has protrayed her as the beautiful dark mistress with a lust for the blood of young girls. It's no wonder she has been the inspiration of many stories and films. Author Bram Stoker modeled his infamous novel Dracula after Erzsébet's sadistic pasttimes."

"She enjoyed the kill and would sometimes prolong it for days, weeks and even months at a time, using various methods of torture. She would have them cut in different ways to provide herself with streams of blood for baths. A cage was even fashioned to hang from the ceiling, in it girls would be poked and prodded with needles so that Erzsébet could have a blood shower. There are even rumours of her biting the flesh of these girls and drinking their blood"

..........and that's when I started to use the name Bathory.

Mine's easy (kinda;))

I'm a big ZZ Top fan, they got me playing guitar. The guitar slinger's name is Billy Gibbons aka The Rev. Billy G (also sometimes Rev Willie G.)

There ya go :)

The first game that ever required me to invent a nickname was Jedi Knight: Dark Forces multiplayer which a friend of mine introduced me to (ElBundee, actually).

I wanted to distort my real-life first name into something that might fit into the Star Wars universe, which basically meant (for me) that I'd have to replace or double some vocals and introduce a "q" somewhere, so I chose "Myquaeel." The "qu" got lost somewhere, obviously.

Don't ask me how to pronounce it; I have no clue and never bothered trying. I tried to establish "Myc" as an abbreviation for everyday use, but people insisted on writing "Mych," so that stuck; Sexmachine pronounces it "Mitch," which is fine with me (but hearing it surprised me into thinking he didn't mean me the one and, so far, only time we met in voice chat).

My nick name "Wormbo" is derived from the game Worms Armageddon where I have a team of worms with names like Wormbo, Atwormizer, Worminator, Cyworm, etc.
I don't spend much time inventing names, and if I do it's usually wasted time...

Back in High School an Adam Sandler movie was out(I don't remember which it was), but in the movie Adam Sandler's character said to some guy whose name was Karl(which just happens to be my name as well),"I think KrazyK is right". Well sooner or later one of my friends used KrazyK to refer to me and it stuck. I am a little crazy(just give me some hard liquor to find out) and I am a Karl too:lol:, so I guess it works. I also go by ChemMan in a few tech forums that I rarely post in, because of my chemistry background. :) But when playing JB, I like KrazyK best. :D

@Bathory: That's an interest reason to choose that name
*KrazyK runs out the door screaming*

Heh... the TK is from my initials and the v3 was stuck on because I'd previously used 01010001 and Big Mad Tony. I still use Big Mad Tony, but I often abbreviate myself to Tony.

I'd pronounce it Michael with an extended aee sound. Phonetically, to the Oxford English, it would be M-aI-k-eI-l.

- as JK2 is a rather new game, I assume Mych is talking about: StarWars: DarkForces.

But back to topic:
I've started playing multiplayer games (back in the DooM days) as Hellraiser (inspired by the books of Clive Barker) but changed that nick into Sexmachine back in 1999. Even though I don't think it's necessary to explain it at all, I can offer you two explanations (and obviously just one is correct):

  • I did a couple of gangbang pr0n movies long time ago and been given that name back then.
  • The nick is inspired by the Godfather of Soul (James Brown) as that song (Sex Machine) was somehow in my mind at the time I've decided to change my nick.

Ha! good to see a good thread about here :)
I wanted a cool nickname that sounded evil in a way so i thought i should put 'Blood' in it. I loved Full metal Jacket at the time, and the "Born to kill" with a peace symbol mixed together was cool. I thought i`d put a good word on the other side. Some bad ones were 'holyblood' and 'pureblood'...pure was close then True got stuck in, perfect ;) I use it everywhere now, but if its too much to type.. 'True' on its own does the job :)
(my first name is Grant too Tahngarth ;) )
