Who was I attacking? :con: I said I think we've been lucky in the past that the Linux installer has come bundled with the games, I don't think that is all that crazy of an idea, personally. I also mentioned the differences in licensing issues between older games and this game.

I don't think it's any on person's fault necessarily that the linux client isn't out. I think it's dumb to go crazy over it, but people can certainly do that if they don't have anything better to do. The more annoying thing is how the official list gets spammed to heck everytime someone posts about it on there.

None of you guys read ProUnreal.com? There's a very interesting post about this subject over there. It looks like one of the issues might be Gamespy and some proprietary code:

http://www.prounreal.com/?t=73341&f=180

That's about the server software (which has been released!), not about the client software.
And while we're already at that article: He takes the numbers of web server os' and equals them with game servers. Not only that, he concludes from the webserver to the os. Guess what? I use apache with Windows XP, yes that's possible!
And last but not least:
**NOTE:** I chose to use the 2005 results over the 2006 results. Why? Godaddy, one of the largest domain registrars, moved their 2.3 million "parked" domains from a Unix server farm to Windows based servers in late 2006. We all know how many domains simply get taken and parked with a generic "Welcome!" front page, therefore trying to use 2006's server numbers is skewed and cannot be used in this context.
"2006 numbers would skew the numbers towards windows, while 2005 skews them towards linux, so I used those."

Hi all =)

...the linux client isn't out. I think it's dumb to go crazy over it....

Why? (why is it dumb to go crazy over it?)
What is the install base of Linux client and servers! I would think large enough to be a group with a little clout, no?
Anyway that is beside the point, I would think any one on linux has every right to be a bit  after expecting a client and then not knowing if one is under development (with the intention to release)!

But in general I (just my opinion) am just surprised that after having so much support from the community (modders, mappers, server providers, etc) that they could not put a little bit more effort in to sort out more things before release!

my 2 cents ;-)

I'm sure that the servers do, but I doubt that the clients do. And a server package is released, while a client is not. It should tell you something :)

Hiya Sir_Brizz :)

"IDC's report for Q1 2007 says that Linux now holds 12.7% of the overall server market.[40] This estimate was based on the number of Linux servers sold by various companies.

Desktop adoption of Linux is approximately 1%. In comparison, Microsoft operating systems hold more than 90%.[41][42][43][44][45][46][47]"
=> taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux

by extension (and a little bit of imagination) if every 1 in every 100 is a linux (or potential) gamer then would that not mean that with the amount of linux clients it would be worth the development?

If the company does spend time to create a linux server then why not spend the extra time needed to extend that work to also include the client?

oh ;) I still don't understand how it could be considered dumb to go crazy over a linux build?
Just think if the situation was the reverse, we all sit on Windows boxes and the game is only running on linux?

up at 3cents now =)

A master class in the art of disputation

Good Afternoon and welcome to a master class in debating technique from Sir_Brizz.

Watch closely class and you will learn some useful techniques for winning an argument no matter the subject.

Today's lesson will deal with the following techniques:

  • The Strawman Argument
  • Ad Hominem attacks against groups
  • Using denotation and connotation to confound opponents
Who was I attacking? :con:
This is an example of creating a Strawman argument.

The original charge was that Sir Brizz was attacking the "messengers" (note the plural with no individual identified) but Sir Brizz responds as though he had been charged with attacking an individual.

"who" could allow for a plural but will be read by most as relating to an individual (utilising the difference between denotation and connotation). And, of course, Sir Brizz is innocent of attacking an individual. Trouble with that is that no one accused him of attacking an individual.

Verdict: Not Guilty of a charge that was never made. Sir Brizz manages to appear as the maligned party

This leads on to a favoured Sir Brizz tactic, the Ad Hominem attack on groups rather than individuals. This is a particularly cunning technique as it often achieves the objective of an Ad Hominem attack (to discount the argument or distract attention from the argument of another because of some unrelated attribute of that other) whilst avoiding singling out an individual who might be motivated to respond.

Everyone has been freaking out...it is dumb

The odds are that most of the "Everyone"s will not be sufficiently motivated to respond whilst their argument is demonised. It is also quite difficult to respond as an individual to an attack that has been made on a group - more insulation from the prospect of an effective response by the opposition.

That's it for today class.

Now remember to do your reading for tomorrow!

Chapter 8 - How to nitpick over minor details or irrelevancies in order to divert attention from the weakness of your position.

And get plenty of sleep and eat your greens - stamina and unrelenting persistence are essential attributes if you want to win. And look at the muscles on Sir Brizz - a marathon runner amongst debaters.

And the really sad thing is that Sir_Brizz doesn't need to do this. He is a formidable debater without the cheap debating club tricks (and quite fun to engage in a discussion). Somewhere in the last six months or so he seems to have lost the distinction between winning and winning the argument. He's quite capable of winning an argument but seems these days simply to prefer winning. :(

Rein just calls it a pet project....wow. I wanted to punch Rein in the face.
At worst, all Mark Rein is doing is his job - if he has picked up from internal Epic discussion that the Linux client is possibly looking more difficult than was thought then he has to start lowering expectations. It doesn't mean that he is responsible for the decision. You really can't blame him for that.

1. Don't post in the intrawebs if you are looking for well constructed, logical arguments
2. Give Brizz a break. He works here.
3. Always memorize Kafros' posts as soon as they appear on your mail notification (they are deleted/edited by admins :D )

If I ever get around to reformating, I was looking into using Ubuntu. I hope they get a Linux client by then :( I want to try out the game again with all the patchs.

Tasty

I love my ubuntu and would be happy to help out if ya need it.
Dual boot is my first hint

I tried dual boot and I failed :( I have three drives in my computer, and was hoping to have a different OS on each one (each drive is different and I am cheap :p). When it comes to dual boot though, I fail. The last one I did was 3.1 & 95, and I did bad at that.

Contrary to popular belief, I don't sit around all day carefully crafting each reply to every post that I make. If I make sweeping generalizations, that is all they are -- Generalizations.

I'm sure I could likewise piecemeal refute your post, but I don't even care. You can join the loving ranks of other people on this forum who don't care about my arguments (or tend to not want to or care to try to understand them) and instead attack the delivery of the arguments.

Fun times! :Poop:

I'm not sorry I bought the game now (I'm quite addicted, especially to some of the community created maps), and I've resigned myself to having to keep a Windows installation because I've since bought some other games as well, but I would not have bought UT3 in the first place had I known there was not going to be a Linux client. I hope there is, because it's the game I play most in Windows and I'd go there a lot less often if I could play it right here. I'd in fact get to play it a lot more, because I could sneak in a few rounds whilst procrastinating getting work done :)
