Dark City 5.5/10.
Oh dear! I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree about this one. It's not without merit - very strong on the "Do I love you only because I remember loving you" question but other than that it's your standard issue dark Gotham. The tagline could have been "William Hurt
is Commissioner Gordon".
Kiefer Sutherland was just annoying and the whole affair made as about much sense as, well, errr, The Matrix.
When all is said and done, I enjoyed The Matrix more.
More (and better, if derivative) action, the skit on the nature of reality might not have been done as well but it was done well enough and the whole affair exuded enough coolness to cure global warming (naturally, I exclude numbers 2 & 3 from these kind words
.
I hesitate to say this but I also thought the characterisations in The Matrix superior to Dark City. In part, no doubt, that is a function of the greater running time of The Matrix but it is also a function of having a central character whose memory (and also it seems) personality have been wiped clean. No mean feat for an actor to present less emotion and personality that Keanu Reeves. I never felt any sense that the character was at any risk from either William Hurt's character or the baddies.
I suppose it was serendipity that caused the DVD to turn up in the local supermarket for 3GBP after I had been put off investigating Dark City by some astonishingly high online prices (one major UK retailer had the bluray on sale for 60GBP [90-odd USD]).
