La rivière du hibou (aka
Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge). Simply brilliant, one of the best short movies I've ever seen. The somewhat bad audio and video quality actually makes it even more interesting and appear older than it actually is.

Near Dark. Very entertaining. I much prefer these redneck-type vampires to the Anne Rice-style highbrow ones. Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen are kickass in this one, especially when they get to be violent (I loved the bar scene), the two main characters were a little too 80s lovey-dovey for me though.

Deutschland im Herbst. Great images and a great snapshot of how German society and especially the Left were affected by the terrorism of the Red Army Faction and the backlash by the state against it. Fassbinder's likening of the state actions to those of Nazi Germany is - while going too far - essentially mirroring the opinion of many members of the Left and also highlighting the very real continuity of administration personnel between Nazi and West Germany.

Home. Yann Arthus-Bertrand's beautiful images of the world don't only work as photographs, but also as moving pictures. I'm glad for the upbeat ending, as the message conveyed in the rest of the movie is very sobering and often downright depressing. Everyone should see this and gain new appreciation for this planet of ours.

The Breakfast Club. Five clichéd characters break their clichés by interacting with each other - in a rather entertaining way. The music and dance scene could have been avoided, but other than that, everything's fine the way it is. Definitely one of the best teen movies ever made. Ally Sheedy was hot!

Luna Papa. Eccentric and different, and in that, and its surrealism, reminiscent of Emir Kusturica. Great performance by the girl and her father, and to a lesser degree, by the brother (played by Moritz Bleibtreu, the only known name in the cast). "Human evil", seen here in the form of prejudiced villagers, must be fought whenever the occasion arises.

Picnic at Hanging Rock. This movie entirely lives by its foreshadowing, creating a subtle tension. The dreamy images are supported in an excellent way by the atmospheric score, especially by the pan flute repeatedly playing. An interesting period piece depicting the locked-in-ness in an all-girls school at the turn of the century. My only major gripe was with the awkwardness of a lot of the acting, particularly in speech.
