I think this is a silly thread. A forum is a place for people to ask
questions and get proper answers.

And if you don't like a topic, don't read it.

;)
Nope, i shouldn't.
I see myself as a Forum Regulars and I have nothing against people asking question other find dumb.
I don't want newcommers to feel unwelcome to this forums.
I know many of them will read this thread and if they do they will find at least one they dare to ask questions without getting flamed.
If I can help someone out I very glad. I came to this forums because I had a lot questions needed to be answered.
No one ever flamed me or gave me the feeling I was a 'dumb n00b'. No one ever flamed me because my english wasn't my native language. I sure had and still have spelling errors and my grammar isn't allways correct.
I remember when Rooster was a moderator at this forum, he spend a lot of time here helping people with their problems and answer 'newbie' question. He has a big patience and he was never mean to anyone as long as they didn't act like m0s.
That's why he is a local legend of PuF.

Thread like this can make new members feel bad and feel unwelcome.

Something has went wrong with PuF.

There's a problem with that, though.

If incoming members feel that they shouldn't be required to do a little bit of research on their own (we're talking about reading a FAQ or two, or a quick search on google) then it actually hurts the community over all.

The reason for this is that the majority of the community's resources are spent answering the same questions over, and often because you're answering with the same thing repeatedly, your answer tends to be shorter every time you answer it.

It's very much like the old proverb about giving a man a fish, and you've fed him for a day, whereas teaching him to fish for himeself feeds him forever.

People, when they know they can use us for quick answers, often fail to actually understand those answers. So, instead of getting a forum where people are asking new and interesting questions, we get the same "Is this a cheat?" "What's an aimbot?" "<insert weapon> sucks!"

It's because of the fact that most of the conversation here tends to involve the same repeated questions and answers, and doesn't encourage a little self-help, that causes people to feel the "alright, I've gotten all I can from this forum, time to move on" feeling that many have expressed as their reason for leaving.

The question I get asked all the time that drives me absolutely nutz is "Do you think Dopefish will make a lovechild with me?"

That ranks right up there with people asking me if the redeemer on november pics are real or faked. Of course they are real, people. What kind of cruel person do you take me for? :)

SC, it's not the FAQ thread I don't like. It's a very good idea.

It's this thread I don't like.
And look at the topic, what does it say?

For a Swede Swedix makes a lot of sence ;) I do agree, but SC is also right. I lurked until I had a question I couldn't answer THEN I registered. It might be a strain on the vets to answer the same questions over and over, but thats just the way it has to be because UT is getting old. 2 years ago, there were no old used up topics or question, now for some of you there is. However new people buy the game and for them the question is not "has this question been asked before", but "is it a redeemer in November?"
If you do not like a question, don't answer it, (like SC said the answer will be shorter after a while), let Swedix take care of it :)

Ok, ok, let's all stay friends ;)

Let's indeed look at the subject: "Forum regulars: what questions do you hate getting asked?" and not "Do you want to help newbies?"

I don't mind that newbies (what's a newbie anyway?) ask questions. Of course not. If I can I will help them. That's what the forum is for. But I totaly agree with SC that they should do some research. It's also a task of the veterans to point them in the right direction. Tell them about the FAQ and tell them about the search-engine.

But that was not the point. I want to help newbies but there are questions which I hate and NOT ONLY when they are asked by newbies. Most questions on the forum come from veterans, not from newbies. So stop the newbie bashing :)

Btw. I just noticed that my aim improved by cleaning my monitor

Neither do I, but let's face facts here Swede: many of the questions answered in the FAQ have been asked by n00bs time and time and time again, and each time there has seemed to be an increase in annoyance felt by members. Judging by the number of views the FAQ has, I'd say it's been a bit of a success, as I haven't seen those topics being asked quite so often. And as for the tone in the topic of the thread...well, that is to be debated. It has been there for months now and not many people have expressed distaste in it.

It's this thread I don't like.
And look at the topic, what does it say?

Well, if we're going to look strictly at the thread's title, then there's even more reason for you to take your own advice and cease and desist complaining about this thread.

The thread's title is "Forum regulars: What questions do you hate getting asked?". That's it. No "Hey, vets, how much do we hate n00bs?" or "1001 reasons new people should shut up!"

It's a simple question asking people who've been in a community for a long time what kind of questions they're tired of seeing. And if you go back and actually read Dopefish's original post in the thread, it's about using this thread to collect those questions that are repeatedly asked into a central place so that new people can get in-depth answers, checked for correctness, in a nice, easy to follow format.

Instead, you're going to complain that people who have been in the forums for awhile have absolutely no right to list questions that they feel should be answered in that central FAQ?

I'm getting a wee bit tired of all the people using the "but think of the newbies" excuse to flame people. It's like all the stupid laws that get passed in the states taking away your civil rights in order to "protect the children".

The forum regulars have every last little right that those new to the forum have. They have the right to post a thread like this, even if it's to complain about a question. This thread isn't going out into other threads and beating up newbloods. It isn't even about bad feelings towards newbloods at all, if you'd taken the time to avoid the "feck everyone else, protect the n00bs" kneejerk reaction flamefest that's starting to take over.

You cannot tell anyone else to "ignore threads they don't like" if you aren't going to do the same.

And, on that note, I have a couple new Q&A's for you to consider.

What is the best weapon for UT/What is your favorite weapon in UT?
Usually when newbies ask this question, they don't stop to realize that many people use different weapons for different gametypes AND in different situations. What is the favorite for one person chasing down an enemy flag carrier is most likely different than someone else's favorite. The possibilities are endless; it is best left up to you to decide which weapon is the best.

What is the best map for UT/What is your favorite map in UT?
On the same note as "What is the best weapon/What is your favorite weapon", many people here on the forums play many different gametypes. There are also lots of different tastes on the forums and many different opinions. Again, it is better that you decide which map(s) are the best for you.

I don't know if this is the right way to answer or approach these (I just did it how I felt it should've been done), so, again, any help would be appreciated.
