Oh, and Megatron, some people don't want to build their own. No need to get all uppity about it.

my bad.. pricewatch.com had it mistyped.

True, but you try and push a 2.2GHz P4 to 3GHz without one and it won't last long.

And those numbers, while slightly higher than what I would predict are much more reasonable than the first numbers you posted.

Only 7 fans?

Try 8
1 top of case (exhaust)
1 side of case (intake)
1 rear of case (exhaust)
1 front of case (intake)
1 on CPU (copper heatsink)
1 on chipset
1 on GPU (GeForce3)
1 in power supply

I hit about 43°C under heavy load. 40°C @ nominal conditions.

Oh yeah, it's a 1.2GHz overclocked to 1.4GHz.

Its not sheque to have so many fans but :
Two 7000 RPm 50cfm delta's on Kanie wing type 'w'
Two 6800 Rpm 45cfm delta's one backing up a standard across the bottom of case. One placed glancing off the maxtor hard drive
One (puny, quiet, 27 cfm) delta drawing air up away from all the drive, floppy, DVD and CD--RW power connectors in the drive bay.
My case has six 'standard' fans - all 80 mm ys tech - four in blowholes.
That makes 11 fans.
Plus two power supply fans, plus ati rad fan, plus northbridge fan.

How does 15 fans grab you?

I bet it sounds like C-130 on takeoff! (Mine are a tad quieter.. the side & top are brush fans, not ball bearing -- so they die in 4 years instead of 6... whoopee)

My wife & kids would kill me if it was that loud... I've had a CPU fan over 5000RPM.. holy cripes.. the vibration & noise was horrible. I changed down to a lower CFM fan and all is good.

My old specs where for a machine that went south. My new machine is:

P4 1.9
512M DDR PC2100
Tyan MB
SB Live 5.1
GeForce Ti200
DX8.1

D3D in UT with no tweaks

8 min

WTF?!?!?!

My 3dMark2001 is 5020.

Something is seriously wrong here. Anyone know of some things to look into or tweek sites?

Thanks in advance.

My Ti200 card does crap in D3D mode....
try openGL I bet it does much better!!!
You should be getting about 90-100fps!
I would think your 3Dmark2001 score would be a little higher too.
I get about 8250.

Speaking of fans.....

Anyone know of a good heatsink/fan combination that isn't loud?

Socket A.

I bought several and plugged them into the power supply and they were all too noisy.

Most of the noise is coming from my 400W Sparkle power supply.
I'm going to put a quiter/lower rpm fan in there but I need to get a better case because I can't keep this one cool. It is not difficult to get the internal ambient T to 40C and the processor above 50C with the case I have at this time.

The Swiftech MCXC370 is a bloody good HS (though quite expensive) and can be fairly quiet if paired with something like a Papst or YS-TECH 80mm fan. Another good choice would be the Alpha PAL 8045, again this uses a low rpm 80mm fan so you get a decent performance/noise ratio.

If CPU temps are a problem with your current HS/F you could try a side intake. I have an 80mm YS-TECH 45cfm side intake fan ducted onto a FOP32-1 cooling a 1Gig T-Bird @ 1.4Gig with full load temps ~50-54C. Even with the 80mm fan turned off, I get lower CPU temps than I normally would due to the duct. :)

More info

My other computer is:
1.2 AMD
Geforce2 Ultra
256M

It's performance after a clean UT install is 69fps! That is amazing that the P4 1.9 only gets 25fps. Another interesting fact. If I run UT using the software renderer, it is almost identical to D3D?!?

This is crazy.

And yes Rukee, with opengl I get around 70fps. I just think that it should be faster than my other PC. Oh, I also swapped video cards in the 2 machines and nothing changed on the P4 with the Geforce2. 25 fps. The AMD 1.2 went up 10 or so frames.

Goldengate Copper Heatsink just add a 30/32CFM fan. Check out my sig, click on the Rig link and check the bottom.

It is not difficult to get the internal ambient T to 40C and the processor above 50C with the case I have at this time.
I upgraded to this case -- and wow.. my temps dropped like you wouldn't believe: MAXTOP 147KG2F-USB BLUE -- it comes with 3 fans, so you just need one other. If you doubt it will push your system (re: powersupply), just look at mine and try to tell me yours is more demanding.

I have an 80mm YS-TECH 45cfm side intake fan ducted onto a FOP32-1 cooling a 1Gig T-Bird @ 1.4Gig with full load temps ~50-54C.
Anything over 52°C isn't very good. At my worst, I would crash at 53°C (XP is a bit more sensitive to CPU temp than other OS's). My current fan never let's my o/c 1.2 @ 1.4 go over 45°C (and that's only when it's hot in the room, running for 5 hours doing video conversion).

That is amazing that the P4 1.9 only gets 25fps.
That just means something isn't set up correctly.

Oh, I also swapped video cards in the 2 machines and nothing changed on the P4 with the Geforce2. 25 fps.
UT is CPU limited moreso than video. I saw VERY little difference going from GeForce2 to GeForce3. Now, Unreal II is a different story!

I finally got around to popping in the Athlon XP1800+

Min 60.95, Max 155.11, Ave 95.27

Epox 8KHA+
1.53Ghz Athlon XP1800+
256 MB Corsair XMS 2400 DDR
Voodoo 5 5500
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound Card.

When I installed the XP1800+ I forgot to
change the clock to 133. Out of curiosity I ran
a test to see the difference between the Athlon
and the Athlon XP at somewhat comparable clock speeds.

Athlon XP1800+ clocked at 1.16Ghz

Min 56.01, Max 138.26, Ave 86.12

Previously:

Min 53.91, Max 128.13, Ave 79.57

Epox 8KHA+
1.1Ghz Athlon
256 MB Corsair XMS 2400 DDR
Voodoo 5 5500
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz Sound Card.
