The majority of gamers who play UT or any FPS out there are playing with a keyboard and mouse. But face it, playing this way SUCKS and will definitely not evolve FPS gaming.

Personally I'm playing with Gravis Dual Xterminator and Mouse (kinda weird)...but it works better for me since I am much, MUCH faster. Obviously, there are some limitations. I ask this: when is the gaming community going to WAKE UP and deliver a true game controller spefically for 3D gaming? Is anyone doing any kind of research out there for this?

I agree. The mouse/keyboard combo is... well it's old. Games have adbvanced, but the way we interface with them has not. I've yet to find a new controller that feels right.

Nah...

I've tried using different controllers, and I always wind up going back to the good ol' mouse/keyboard! :D

baaaaaaaaaah I grew up using the Keyboard(hell I started using the mouse not too long ago).

Until something comes around that gives the responsiveness of the mouse and the versatility of the keyboard...I'm sticking to this.

Well, the best thing about the keyboard is all the buttons available so close by. The mouse is great for pointing but continual motion is difficult because you have to lift the mouse to move it back to the center.

I'd be willing to try a PantherXL. Others like it. But there is a big learning curve I hear.

Heya Guyz,

I use the gravis gamepad pro in combination with my mouse.

This works realy fine for me, although there are less buttons to define on the pad but the keyboard is my backup-pall for all those key-binds.

I never want to switch to kb again, I've tried but couldnt get used to it.

YES YOU CAN DODGE!!! I've absolutely no problem with dodging whatsoever.

You r not alone in this one Imortal Fusion!

so did I.. I've played FPSes since Doom and I was a keyboardist until HalfLife (and I got this game probably a year+ after it was released). I'm real glad I did go to the mouse/kb combo because I really sucked back then
my motto for this is: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. just find what works for you, and I'll find what works for me and we'll all be happy. I would rather use my intellimouse (hell, if it wasn't for UT I'd still be using a crappy serial mouse) than spend $50+ for a controller I'd have to put away whenever I'm done playing games

The best FPS controller I ever used was in the arcade

Ever heard of WAR:Final Assult, it's an arcade FPS made by midway. up to 4 machines can be connected together, the conteoller setup was so cool, but I have yet to be able to duplicate it. on the left hand you had these buttons, likr the buttons on a arcade fighting game, set up in a dimond shape for forward, strafe right, strafe left and backwards, off to the right side of them, you had another for jump where your thumb would be, closest thing to this in UT is the WASD and space as jump, on the right side, it has a analog jotstick that was used for look up, looks down, and turn left and right with a trigger for fire. it also had a button for you left thumb that was used to toss your weapon, cause in WAR, if you want to pickup another weapon, you had to drop the one you had, and although it doesnt sound it, it made the game really cool. I've tried setting up a joystick to take the place of the mouse, but I could never get turn left and right to work with the joystick.

so I'm still using a keyboard and mouse, cause it's the best way to go, and I'll never give up my voice taunts.

i had lots of problems going to kb and mouse b/c i came from console land straight to ut (first comp fps i've played). at first i hated it, but after 3 or 4 weeks, i realize there's no way (that i can think of) to achieve the speed and precision of the mouse look function with a controller (although i haven't tried the dual strike yet).

actually i don't use a mouse, i use a trackball and completely love it for these type games - no picking up and resetting the mouse and no mousing your way straight off the desktop in the heat of battle (which i consantly do when i play at my friends house). personal preference i guess.

i do think though that the keyboard part of the setup could be bettered (possibly). i'm interested in trying out the new strategic commander thing from microsoft to replace my keyboard - probably won't work though.

The way my mouse su><0rs, I'd agree if I probably wouldn't be even worse with something I wasn't used to. :(

If anyone has some tips for cleaning out the dust from mice's rollers I'd be grateful to hear them.

i use a pantherxl. yes, you can dodge with it.. takes some practice, but it's doable. you may never be able to dodge 100% of the time when you get the hang of it.. but personally i don't see myself going back to mouse/keys ever again. we won't be playing ut forever (face it) and i doubt every fps that ever comes out will have a command similar to dodge so if you plan on sticking with fps games for a long time you may as well start learning the thing now. ;)

if you plan on making the switch, get ready for some very awkward games until you get used to it. it has a pretty steep learning curve, but one game will happen that you just 'click' with it. (or at least that's what happened to me, one day after struggling for weeks with it i hopped in a few games and tore sh!t up, that's when i knew there was no turning back)

one downside is that the pxl is no longer being produced, so you may have to wait a month or two for the new pro model to come out. the original pxl was known for its horrible craftsmanship and fragile tendencies. personally i've already busted two buttons on mine and i started using it in may. the pro will be a lot more durable, have more buttons, and the resolution on the trackball will be bumped up a bit so waiting for one might be cool. :)

one odd thing i may note, the trackball on the pxl is on the left-hand side and the joystick on the right. being left-handed i took to this almost immediately.. i have no idea how well somebody who has been mousing with their right hand for years would adapt. plenty of people use it so i assume it's not that hard, but just a warning.

in closing, i shall now say: anybody who insists that mouse/keys is the ONLY way to go needs to become a little more openminded.. ;)

yeah jenny, i took a look at that controller and thought about picking it up but was turned off by the left handed trackball (one on the right side, and i'd be owning it for sure).

although, being weened on turok (nintendo) i should be able to pick it up b/c with the n64 controller i was moving witht the right hand and aiming with the left (stick).

i don't know, i just have too many hours at work pointing with the right hand. i may could overcome it by the time ut is in the wallmart bargain bin for $9.95 (right next to mechwarrior 2 - electric boogaloo).

out.

Mouse/keybord combo rox....why do you think it's the most used combo???:D
I wonder where you would have to leave all your taunts on a joystick....i can't leave my 33 taunts i use under my joystick.
So mouse/keybord rules !!! :D

Ixari's right, there is a reason it's the most used combo. :)

All these gamepad things, like the Spaceorb and Xterminator kinda feel gimmiky to me. And besides, with kbd/mouse, I can play some games without moving my hands! Wikkid! :D
